For an enviable makeup look, never underestimate the power of exfoliation and a good primer

All great makeup artists will tell you that while products and techniques are key, a stunning canvas is the foundation for any great look.

To create a beautiful base, hydrating the skin will leave it dewy, supple, and well prepared for foundation, concealer, and more.

This is important for all makeup users, but particularly those in middle age and beyond, who may be dealing with increased dryness.

Over time, the body's production of sebum, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides results in less moisture.

Unfortunately, colder temperatures (like we're starting to experience now) only make this worse.

London Dermatology Centre explained: "The air naturally holds less moisture, and the reduced humidity makes it much harder for the skin to retain hydration.

"This lack of moisture is one of the main reasons why skin often feels tight, rough, or flaky during winter."

For women over 50 facing seasonal skin issues, Cult Beauty makeup artist Amy Rostas has shared her advice.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, the expert stated: "When winter hits, our skin tends to get drier and makeup can start to look dull or patchy."

To avoid this, it's important to prep the skin effectively, starting long before you actually apply your makeup products.

First, regular exfoliation is key. Ms Rostas instructed: "Gently slough away dead skin a couple of times a week to create a smooth surface."

Then, when it comes to applying your makeup, start with a hydrating primer to "keep the glow alive". "Think of it as a moisture magnet that creates a smooth canvas," she suggested.

According to the expert, women over 50 should also be thinking about their foundation type.

While you may have been using the same trusted matte product for years, a dewy or luminous one is more hydrating and moisturising.

For something even lighter, consider a BB cream, CC cream, or tinted moisturiser.

"These formulas hydrate as they brighten, preventing your skin from looking flat or powdery," the makeup artist explained.

The trick is to apply it using a damp sponge, gently pressing the product into your skin for an "even finish".

The MUA advised against piling on thick layers, telling women over 50: "Less is more."

She added: "Finish with a light dusting of translucent powder only where necessary – typically the T-zone – to keep your makeup from settling into fine lines or looking cakey."

Beyond base makeup, she also advised mature women to invest in cream blushes and highlighters over liquid or powder varieties.

She explained that these "blend seamlessly", giving your face a "natural, youthful radiance".

"Finish with a hydrating setting spray to lock everything in and keep your skin feeling fresh and dewy all day long," she concluded.
