Adding a little makeup to your routine can help brighten your face, giving you a more youthful and confident air as you navigate the day or head out for the night.
Concealer is one of the most popular choices out there, and thankfully comes in many different forms, whether that is in a tinted moisturiser or simply a plain product, to cover any blemishes, dark shadows or discolouration.
However, despite its widespread use, many are slipping up when it comes to its application.
Professional makeup artist Carina has shared several "problems" that women over 50 create with their concealer - but should avoid. She even applied the product on half of her face as a makeup "do" and the other half as a makeup "don't" to demonstrate the difference.
One of the issues the expert named was using a concealer that is too light for your skin tone, and dragging it along all the way under the eye to hide tiredness.
According to the expert, there's a right way to apply concealer - and a wrong way

When selecting your product, it is essential to identify a close-enough match for your complexion. Otherwise, you risk ruining your natural look.
Carina said that dragging an ill-matched concealer under the eye actually "accentuates the dip" and "makes [her] eye look puffy and old".
The experts at L'Oreal seconded this, warning that using a light shade of concealer "may not always be effective".
In fact, when handling under-eye shadows, it can even "create a grey shadow that emphasises the darkness even more".

Additionally, Carina warned against going heavy with any powder and simply using the product "just where you want to brighten".
She showed followers how she adds the product to the inner and outer corners of her eye, as well as just under her eyebrow arch.
Placing the product just where it is needed "brings those areas forward", with Carina adding: "When we’re older, we want to lighten and brighten, we don't want to make it look puffy and dry."
She further suggested mixing the concealer with some eye cream would prove helpful "if you're exceptionally dry", as this assists with overall hydration.
Carina said that using the product a tad more sparingly could brighten your look

This is key to ensuring you conceal any fine lines or wrinkles which may have appeared from dehydration.
At L'Oreal, the cosmetic experts suggested using a concealer with "a slightly more peach tone" to "effectively colour correct and brighten the under-eye area".
"This will not only help to cancel out the darkness but also provide a natural-looking finish by blending and masking seamlessly with your natural skin tone or foundation," they explained.
