Softer shades are said to "bring out the eyes in a more flattering way" than black shades do, the expert proclaims

As your complexion ages, it’s necessary to adapt your beauty routine and perfect the ways in which to subtly suit your skin’s ever-evolving texture, as well as your unique facial features.

But that doesn’t mean that you must sacrifice your flair and creativity for makeup altogether.

In fact, getting older boasts a perfect opportunity to explore new methods to enhance your features and try out new techniques and products.

Celebrity makeup artist Bryony Blake has shared useful makeup tips to complement a more mature skin and curate a “soft, youthful” look - and it all comes down to eyeliners.

“When it comes to eyeliner, opt for softer shades like a chestnut brown rather than black. It’s less harsh and brings out the eyes in a flattering way,” she suggested.

She added: “A little smudging along the lash line creates a soft, youthful effect that works beautifully for mature eyes.

“Perfecting eyeliner and eyeshadow can be tricky. Use a cotton bud dipped in make up remover to tidy edges or clean up smudges for a flawless finish.”

The more subtle shade of chestnut iis much more versatile than originally thought at first glance, according to L’Oreal Paris.

“Brown eyeliner is often hailed as a softer alternative to the classic black, perfect for no-makeup makeup and soft everyday makeup looks,” the company ruled.

Flattering for all eye colours, its neutral tone can complement every eyeshadow colour under the sun - although L’Oreal highlighted that it was particularly well-matched with warm hues, such as gold, bronze and burgundy.

But, from pressed powder, loose glitter, liquid shadow to satin, metallic and shimmery, it can be challenging to find the one perfect shadow that sits well on the skin - but Bryony has recommended cream eyeshadows.

"They’re quick, easy and blend beautifully without sitting in fine lines,” Bryony said. But it’s also important to prepare the skin so that you have a hydrated base.

The makeup artist, who has worked on shows from Strictly Come Dancing to Downton Abbey, said: "There are some specific formulas that work well for mature skin.

“Lightweight serums or moisturisers are ideal for prepping the skin, especially if you’re dealing with dryness. They help makeup sit beautifully and last all day.”

And, finally, every night it’s “essential” to remove makeup gently, particularly around sensitive eyes to clean your face and allow your pores to breathe more overnight.
