The new feature will undergo testing at four stores before its roll-out in 2026

Lidl GB is set to revamp its shopping experience with a new self-scanning feature built directly into its Lidl Plus loyalty app.

The innovation will enable customers to scan items whilst they shop, monitor their spending and savings in real time, and complete purchases swiftly at self-checkout terminals.

"Lidl is taking another major step in transforming its in-store experience with the launch of a new self-scanning feature integrated directly into the discounter's loyalty app - Lidl Plus," the company announced.

The technology represents part of Lidl's long-term investment in digital innovation, designed to offer shoppers a faster and more flexible retail experience.

The new feature will undergo testing through a friends and family trial at four stores beginning in September.

Following this initial phase, Lidl plans a phased rollout across its store network from next year.

The self-scanning capability forms part of Lidl's broader digital transformation strategy.

Earlier this year, the discounter successfully piloted its Click, Reserve & Collect service through the Lidl Plus app.

The company has also begun implementing self-checkouts nationwide, offering customers additional payment options.

These technological advances demonstrate Lidl's commitment to enhancing the shopping experience through what it describes as "smart, scalable technology" that continuously evolves the customer journey.

The introduction of self-scanning represents Lidl's latest step in modernising its stores through technology.

Lidl's CEO called the move 'a significant leap forward' in the supermarket's digital evolution

The discounter has been steadily investing in digital infrastructure to enhance customer convenience.

The move positions Lidl alongside other major retailers who have adopted scan-as-you-shop technology, whilst maintaining its focus on value and efficiency.

"This latest investment in its digital infrastructure underlines the discounter's commitment to continuously evolving the customer journey through smart, scalable technology," the company stated.

By integrating the scanning feature directly into the existing Lidl Plus app, customers will have access to all loyalty benefits alongside the new functionality.

Chief executive officer at Lidl GB, Ryan McDonnell, said: "This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution.

"Integrated into Lidl Plus, it's designed to offer customers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop.

"We're investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences.

"Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self-scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop."

The change comes as Lidl trials AI cameras as shoplifting offences soar.
