Facial yoga might not be your first thought when it comes to anti-ageing, but one expert claimed it can work wonders

Getting older is inevitable, and with age comes changes such as sagging, wrinkles, and thinning.

While these physical traits cannot be entirely erased, there are plenty of things women can do to delay ageing and even shave years off their appearance.

Developing an excellent skin care regime is often the first resort for anti-ageing enthusiasts, and a strategic hair makeover can provide results too.

But in conversation with a yoga instructor, GB News revealed another unlikely method.

According to founder of Yoga Kawa, Echo Wang, facial exercise can sculpt and tone the face, restoring it to its once youthful appearance.

'Srengthen facial muscles, improve circulation, and boost oxygen flow and nutrients to the skin'

When asked how women can look "10 years younger", Echo stated: "Yoga works wonders from the inside out, helping you feel and look younger.

"Not only does it benefit the body, but it can also help reduce visible signs of ageing. Face yoga, in particular, focuses on strengthening facial muscles, improving circulation, and boosting oxygen and nutrient flow to the skin, leaving it revitalised.

"Some studies even suggest that yoga can improve skin elasticity and help reduce those pesky wrinkles."

An article entitled 'Association of Facial Exercise With the Appearance of Ageing', published in the National Library of Medicine, confirmed that facial yoga can improve your appearance if you stick to it.

In a study of 16 women aged 45 to 65, experts found that "facial exercise resulted in improved mean upper cheek fullness and lower cheek fullness".

In terms of staving off ageing, their estimated age "decreased significantly" when the baseline was compared with the study end.

Experts concluded: "Participants were more satisfied with all facial ageing outcomes."

Echo added: "Regular practice doesn't just improve your skin; it also boosts your overall strength and flexibility.

"You might even find yourself getting back into activities you thought were behind you, like dancing or simply getting up from the floor without feeling like you need a crane."

Another positive of facial yoga is that it doesn't require too much dedication. The skin gurus at Nivea advised: "If you want to see results quickly, you should aim to perform your facial exercises three to five times a week for around 20 minutes each time."

Facial yoga may have a secondary benefit, too. As well as "inducing underlying muscle growth", dedicated exercises may improve stress levels.

'Some studies suggest that yoga can improve skin elasticity and help reduce pesky wrinkles'

"We all know that stress is a major culprit behind tired, ageing skin, and yoga is fantastic for melting that away," Echo said.

Indeed, the Dr Jenni Clinic confirmed that "stress sets off a chain reaction in your body, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help you cope".

Experts said: "While this 'fight or flight' response is useful in the short term, chronic stress keeps your body stuck in overdrive. Over time, this wears you down, both inside and out."

They explained that stress accelerates telomere shortening, "which is tied to premature wrinkles and age-related health issues". What's more, it can catalyse collagen breakdown, oxidative stress, inflammation, and disrupted sleep.

Echo concluded: "So, while there's no miracle cure for ageing, adding yoga to your routine can definitely help you glow with youthful radiance."
