An expert shares her anti-ageing skin care tips

The anti-ageing enthusiast is very selective when it comes to the products she uses

Some people are blessed with eternally youthful skin, defying the hands of time with minimal effort thanks to genetics and a little luck.

However, for most ageless beauties, work is required to maintain vibrance and radiance, especially as we get older and our skin becomes more susceptible to damage.


GB News has spoken to women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond about their anti-ageing strategies.

One 44-year-old who "looks better than women 20 years younger" shared the daily routine that keeps her at her physical peak.

And a 58-year-old who looks years younger named the regular treatment that refreshes and rejuvenates her skin.

For 42-year-old Annette Harris, maintaining a youthful appearance comes down to several lifestyle choices.

The cornerstone of her anti-ageing routine is strategic skin care, only using products that keep her complexion healthy and free from damage.

She told GB News: "I am in my 40s, but often receive comments that I look 30 years old. My secret to maintaining a youthful appearance is a combination of healthy eating, regular exercise, and the use of fragrance-free products.

"My skin care routine is simple, focusing primarily on fragrance-free cleansing and moisturising."

In conversation with Skin + Me, consultant dermatologist Dr Malvina Cunningham weighed in on the use of fragrances in skin care.

While scented products can smell delicious and feel luxurious, they carry a few skin risks we should be aware of.

For healthy, happy skin, avoid products that may cause irritation

Dr Cunningham warned: "Allergic contact dermatitis is the main problem and is fairly common.

"It's estimated as affecting approximately one per cent of the population, although the exact numbers are likely higher due to the tendency of bias in these types of studies.

"Fragrances can also cause irritation of the skin, known as irritant contact dermatitis. This can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and low-level irritation can lead to skin hyperpigmentation."

She advised those with sensitive skin to do their research before investing in products that incorporate a fragrance and to opt for scent-free options where possible to "minimise irritation and keep your skin happy".

Developing a routine that banishes blemishes, protects the moisture barrier, hydrates, and heals the skin is crucial.

As well as taking care of her skin, Annette follows a semi-vegan diet that mainly includes chicken and fish, with minimal grain products.

She also exercises daily, whether that's by walking, swimming, or hula hooping.

"Additionally, I make sure to take time to relax and recharge, allowing my body to recover from the daily stresses of life," Annette concluded.

Eating well, prioritising movement, and reducing stress are all hailed as fantastic anti-ageing strategies alongside a good skin care routine.
