The skin care enthusiast relies on an assortment of ingredients to maintain a youthful glow

Skin care offers promising results at all stages of life, with experts recommending an adapted routine to reflect evolving needs.

Those who share their best-kept secrets on social media platforms often highlight the same products.

Amanda McCants recently invited her mother, Kim, to her channel to discuss her most effective beauty hacks, following popular demand from viewers.

Speaking about her mother, Amanda told viewers: “Everybody asks what she does with her skin to keep her looking this young. One thing my mum and I both do is work on our appearance.”

The 56-year-old responded that Retin-A is the first key ingredient in her routine, referring to a brand name for topical tretinoin.

This prescription-strength retinoid is derived from vitamin A and benefits the skin by promoting collagen production.

Although it is primarily used to treat acne, it has also gained popularity as an anti-ageing treatment because it promotes cell turnover.

Philadelphia-based dermatologist Rina Weimann, MD, explained that there are various types of topical retinoids like tretinoin and different hacks to make them more tolerable.

“Despite the benefits of retinoids, everyday use is often limited by skin irritation, peeling, dryness, and burning,” the expert told GB News.

“Some tricks of the trade to help tolerate retinoids include shorter contact time - applying at dinner and washing off at bedtime - mixing with a nighttime moisturiser, and starting with use one to two nights per week, gradually increasing to nightly as tolerated.

“Though retinol creams offer non-invasive wrinkle prevention, even out complexion, promote increased cell turnover, and reduce pore size, their use is often limited by dryness, peeling, and irritation - all of which are drawbacks for those with sensitive skin.”

Another crucial aspect of Kim’s skin care routine is exfoliation, which she repeats at least twice a week to remove dead skin cells.

In the morning, she uses antioxidants like vitamin C and niacinamide, or an oestriol cream. She also applies peptide creams to her neck and chest.

Kim avoids the sun as much as possible, adding: “I’m not even in the house without sunscreen.”

Her skin care routine also extends to her diet, with the 56-year-old explaining that her morning smoothie contains a generous amount of fresh vegetables, beans for added protein, fruits, and water.
