It's the perfect low-maintenance chop for women over 50

A trip to the hair salon can be transformative, taking your locks from lacklustre to luscious in a matter of hours.

For mature ladies, the right cut, colour, and style can even leave you walking out of the hairdresser's looking 10 years younger.

According to one hair expert, a good chop can make all the difference for those keen to reverse the clock and achieve a more youthful appearance.

Professional hairstylist Gabi, who has built up a strong following online as @glamgirlgabi, believes the perfect haircut will brighten your complexion while keeping things soft and natural.

In one TikTok video, Gabi recommended an "edgy" yet "effortless" haircut for women over 50 – the "chic shag".

The "chic shag" is an elegant variation of the original shag cut, a wild, messy chop that became synonymous with 1970s rockers like Stevie Nicks and Mick Jagger.

The sophisticated modern version is heavily layered and choppy, creating volume, dimension, and bounce, often completed with bangs.

"I love [the chic shag] on women over 50," the beauty guru gushed, explaining that the look "brings a bit of movement and softness to your face,".

Highlighting its anti-ageing power, she added that this is "exactly what you want as your features naturally lose volume over time".

"The beauty of a shag is that it works with your hair's natural texture, so if you've got a little wave or bend, this cut makes it look intentional, not messy," she explained, adding that layers are "key" to creating youthfulness.

The "chic shag" is lauded by hair experts at L'Oréal Paris, who have dubbed the cut as one of their favourite low-maintenance looks.

It's perfect for women who want to "simplify their morning routine", yet stay trendy and stylish.

"They add lift around the crown, they add softness around the jawline, which helps draw everything up and just gives a more youthful appearance and shape overall," the experts added.

Gabi confirmed that "one of the best things" about the look is its lack of upkeep, explaining: "This isn't a style that requires constant blow-drying! A little air dry cream or salt spray, and you're done."

A few of her followers doubted this, though, with several commenting that the look requires substantial effort to get it looking its best.

"So not true about effortless! I rock this, but I am telling you, it's a wash every other day and wave with flat iron or flat curling iron," one said.

However, others insisted that the amount of work involved is "up to you". They weighed in on the debate, commenting: "I'm 60 and have this cut and love it. I get so many compliments.

"You can dry it or not. It's up to you how far you want to go to style it."
