A subtle pop of colour can make a major difference to your appearance, a hair guru told GB News

Sometimes a trip to the hair salon is all you need to feel 10 times better and look 10 years younger.

The right colour, cut, and style can be totally transformative, lifting and brightening your face in a matter of hours.

GB News spoke exclusively to celebrity hairstylist Dean Banowetz (aka Hollywood Hair Guy) about his ultimate tips, from bleaching to blow-drying.

With over 30 years of experience, eight Emmy nominations, and multiple award wins, he is an expert in the anti-ageing power of hair.

Colour

Blend, brighten, and soften

While some women banish silver strands as soon as they surface, Dean recommends embracing the grey.

"Blend grey hairs – don't fight them," the expert instructed. Ask for "soft" highlights to create subtlety.

According to the expert, three tones have an instantly anti-ageing effect. He said: "Golden, caramel, and rose gold help warm the skin up. Warm skin equals a youthful appearance.

On the flip side, "severe" colours like jet black or a flat brown should be avoided if your goal is age-defying beauty.

"These shades tend to age you. I would recommend going for a multidimensional colour," he advised.

For added vibrance, Dean recommended some shimmer. "When in doubt, gloss it up. The salon glossing or glaze keeps hair shiny and fresh without damage," he concluded.

Cut

Lift and lighten the look

Dean advised women to opt for haircuts that are shoulder-length or above. "Mid-length styles lift the face, while longer styles tend to drag it down," he explained.

While one-length, blunt cuts may seem chic and dynamic, the hairstylist warned that they can feel "harsh and aggressive" – so ask for texture at the ends.

"Layers are known to bring movement, and they take the weight off ageing features," the expert added.

In the salon, Dean recommended asking for soft layers as opposed to choppy styles, as these are more face-framing.

Anti-ageing enthusiasts can complete the chop with some strategic bangs: "I would recommend trying soft curtain bangs, or a fringe of some sort, as these are known to brighten and hide lines."

Style

Keep it soft and full of movement and bounce

To maximise the dimension created by highlights and layers, Dean emphasised the importance of a voluminous 'do.

For the ultimate bouncy blow-dry, he told women to add volume at the crown, as "flat hair will drag the face down".

"Root leaf sprays and volumising texture powder work great to help increase volume," he shared.

"Loose waves really help to soften your style and give a lot of movement. They soften lines and make your hair look full, as well as being super modern."

Naming one of his "favourite go-tos", Dean told women to tuck one side behind the ear.

"This is a super simple move that will help to lift the cheekbones and really open up the face," he divulged.

The hair guru concluded: "I would avoid any stiff, hard hairspray. I recommend a flexible hold hairspray to keep your hair touchable and fresh."
