Luscious locks cannot be achieved through salon visits alone; you have to boost your barnet from within

Just like the skin, the hair undergoes physical changes over time, often displaying more thinness, dryness, and brittleness with age.

But it's possible to restore your strands to their former glory with a few manageable lifestyle tips. Regular trips to the salon are crucial, of course, but there are plenty of things you can do at home, too.

GB News spoke exclusively to celebrity hairstylist Dean Banowetz about how women can achieve more "youthful" locks sans salon - and it starts with what's in your kitchen.

Dean, founder of Hollywood Hair Guy, claimed that for "healthier hair at any age", women should consume hair-boosting foods such as salmon, eggs, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and berries.

Urging hair enthusiasts to up their salmon intake, the expert explained that the omega-3 fatty acids present "promote shine and scalp health".

For those who aren't too keen on salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, anchovies, caviar, and flaxseed are also high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Eggs also featured prominently in Dean's advice, as they provide both biotin and protein for hair strength.

He also advised ladies to fill up on leafy greens, as these are brimming with iron and folate, which support growth.

Dean suggested snacking on nuts and seeds, too, as these are rich in "scalp-balancing" zinc and selenium.

Berries, which offer vitamin C for collagen production and antioxidant protection, completed the expert's recommendations.

The hair experts at Garnier verified this: "The human body must have vitamin C to survive. Not only does this water-soluble antioxidant help us absorb iron, but it's equally as vital for building the collagen protein that helps renew and repair tissue. It also neutralises damage caused by free radicals emitted by unavoidable environmental hazards. What a superhero."

Some of the most vitamin C-rich fruits include strawberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, and gooseberries. Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits and tangerines are also a go-to for many people and boast excellent health benefits, although their vitamin C content is not quite as high as strawberries.

Beyond dietary choices, Dean emphasised that for "strong, youthful hair", implementing healthy lifestyle habits is non-negotiable.

He stressed the importance of staying hydrated, noting that dry hair often originates from internal dehydration.

He also warned against excessive stress, explaining that cortisol (the body's main stress hormone) can contribute to hair loss.

Regular physical activity also plays a vital role in the expert's hair care philosophy. He advocated staying active to boost circulation, which promotes healthy hair growth by ensuring nutrients reach the scalp effectively.

Finally, he shared an important bedtime hack for beautiful hair: switch to silk pillowcases for less breakage.

Experts widely agree that a nutritious diet is essential for sensational strands, with one holistic nutritionist naming "mother nature's perfect food" for hair health and more.

Taking to TikTok, Joy McCarthy (@joyoushealth), stated: "It's no surprise that your nutrition plays a huge role in the health of your hair."

Indeed, she emphasised that since hair strands are dead tissue, maintaining a healthy scalp is crucial.

In her video, Joy championed eggs, declaring: "I could do a whole video just talking about their health benefits."

Much like celeb hair guru Dean, the nutritionist hailed eggs as a hair superfood due to their protein and biotin content, also praising their healthy fats and iron.

She emphasised the importance of omega-3 fatty acids for scalp health, too, explaining that they improve blood circulation.

"You need good blood circulation so that you get nutrition to the scalp," Joy said, suggesting salmon, sardines, chia seeds, and spirulina as excellent sources.

Pumpkin seeds were her next recommendation, as these contain healthy fats and B vitamins, promoting hair growth and "resilience".

Finally, the nutritionist advised stocking up on yellow peppers. These are packed with vitamin C, which is essential for collagen synthesis.

She added that vitamin C aids sebum production in the scalp, which creates the hair's characteristic "shine".
