Alongside regular trims, there are an abundance of additions to your routine that can promote strong, healthy growth

A multitude of factors play a role in hair health - meaning that there are plenty of ways to enhance volume and shine, even as you get older.

Even daily habits can make a big difference, one hairdresser told GB News, with just the simplest of modifications to your routine working wonders.

Ana Niederhauser-Ostler from hair product company Alter Ego Italy USA said that paying attention to our hair, skin and nails is crucial, considering they’re the first to give an indication that "something’s off".

Getting the right balance of vitamins, minerals and water each day is best to care for your body’s keratin production, according to the Mayo Clinic.

"Making sure you have a healthy diet is essential," Ana said, echoing the medics’ guidance. "Daily habits make a big difference."

If your body is receiving sufficient nutrition, you will function better with shinier hair, stronger nails and hydrated skin.

That’s why, instead of shelling out hundreds on different hair and skin care products, the clinic encouraged people to spend that money on the right groceries.

A reliable balance of vitamins A, E and D, iron, carbohydrates, protein and, of course, water on a daily basis can help your overall health - and your hair will thank you.

"Using a good hair oil and brushing your hair daily, even pre-brushing your scalp and hair on wash day is a great start."

For an extra glossiness, begin incorporating a daily hair oil to distribute a lightweight mist for a "beautiful shine", Ana said.

A lot of influencers online have advocated a variety of hair oils - all with different purposes. Some recommended options include argan oil, rosemary oil and even olive oil.

And, to combat those pesky split ends, hair should be trimmed every six to 10 weeks to promote stronger and healthier growth.

Sleeping on wet hair is also a root cause of significant damage due to its fragility, causing strands to become more susceptible to breakage. Ana emphasised that it was "so important" to never do so.

However, hair can look worse for wear as a result of a number of factors. Weighing in on the matter with her experience, Ana said: "In the salon, we see loss and thinning with hormonal, body pain and diet.

"Although identifying the cause is important, there isn’t always an immediate fix. Treat your hair as the crown it is, and it will shine like the crown you desire!"
