Keeping your mane in place overnight is a great option to prevent breakage, a cosmetologist told GB News

Hair goes through a lot on a day-to-day basis, becoming particularly susceptible to significant breakage even with the slightest of actions.

Thankfully, there are small ways to protect your mane from falling victim to daily damage.

Armed with more than 13 years of experience, a master cosmetologist and certified trichologist Salena Dowdy has offered up her top five hairstyles to help older women’s locks from breakage.

The expert told GB News that it was important to zero in on hairstyles that don’t include a lot of tension on the scalp, opting for “softer” looks.

Equally, for women with a shorter cut, Salena said that a silk or satin scarf would suffice, wrapped around the head to secure it.

It is crucial to take care of your hair overnight, since excessive friction with a pillow as you toss and turn throughout the night could cause a fair amount of damage.

As a result, many experts urge individuals to purchase a silk or satin pillow over a harsher material like cotton.

Other looks that the cosmetologist has suggested are ones with simple braids or twist-outs to reduce tangling, which, in turn, could cause split ends.

Salena Dowdy’s top 5 protective hairstyles

1. “Older women's hair may be more fragile so I recommend doing a low ponytail because it puts less stress on the hair compared to a high ponytail. I would use a softer hair tie and avoid pulling the hair too tight.”

2. Simple braids can keep the hair secure and reduce tangling. French braids are a great option to protect the hair. Making sure there is not a lot of tension pulling on the hair.

3. “Doing a twist out would be great for tucking away the ends of the hair from heat. This could also protect the hair from environmental damage. Depending on what their daily activities are.”

4. “Additionally, a nice chin-length bob would be great for an older woman. It gives movement helping to reduce split ends. It’s easy to maintain at night because you can wrap it and secure it with a silk or satin scarf if needed.”

5. “It’s important to choose a hairstyle that will give comfort to avoid tension and stress on the hair when you're trying to maximise protection and retain growth.”

Echoing the same sentiment, the American Academy of Dermatology Association said that simple actions like rough-drying hair with a cotton towel could also be harming your hair.

Additionally, excessive heat on hair could be causing damage, which is why natural up-dos are the perfect solution.
