Spinach, rocket, spring onions, and chicory should be your top choices this month, according to an expert

As September approaches, gardening enthusiasts should be over halfway through their August checklist.

Between deadheading flowers, harvesting herbs, and planting to attract pollinators, there's plenty to get on with.

Providing insight into how to best care for your garden this month, Online Turf's lawn care specialist and gardening expert Angelika Zaber shared her top tips exclusively with GB News.

Among other suggestions, she advised green-thumbed Britons to plant spinach, rocket, spring onions, and chicory.

Angelika told gardening enthusiasts: "One of the most important jobs to do in August is clearing weeds from any areas around your house, such as your driveway, patio, flower beds, and lawn.

"This will prevent them from establishing fully and reseeding, which would cause more weeds in the future.

"On top of this, weeds compete with your plants for sunlight, nutrients, and water, so removing them will lead to healthier plants."

Highlighting the importance of deadheading, the expert explained that removing faded flowers from border plants "will encourage them to produce more blooms".

"The only time you should not do this is if you prefer them to focus on seed production, in case you want to collect these for later," she added.

Moving on to edible produce, Angelika stated: "Some of the best vegetables to plant in August include spinach, rocket, spring onions, and chicory.

"This will guarantee you a good winter harvest and give you a steady supply of fresh produce."

Providing a word of warning, she added: "Do not plant any fruits, as this is generally better done in September."

Another major error to avoid is allowing your plants to dehydrate and die during blistering temperatures.

"The biggest mistake that you can make is not watering your plants," the gardening guru warned.

"Since August is usually the hottest month of the year, your plants are likely to suffer from heat stress, so it's important to regularly check the soil and water them as needed.

"The best time to do this is either early in the morning or in the evening. If done in the afternoon, most of the water will evaporate before it has a chance to sink into the soil, leaving your plants thirsty."

Another way budding gardeners can elevate their outdoor spaces is by utilising coffee grounds.

According to an expert, the pantry staple is an "overlooked" resource that can "make a big difference".

Jack Stooks, a former gardener to the Royal Family, advised that "the safest way to use it in your garden" is to incorporate it into compost.

"It's reliable, it helps the composting process, and you don't have to worry about it affecting plant health in unintended ways," he explained.
