The Food Standards Agency has confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in three products

SPAR has issued a recall for several of its chicken products after Listeria monocytogenes was discovered in them.

The affected items include SPAR Enjoy Local Cooked Chicken Pieces, Cooked Chicken Slices and Cooked Chicken Fillets.

All products being recalled share the same batch code 5126 and have a use-by date of May 21, 2025.

Customers are being advised not to consume these products due to potential health risks.

The SPAR Enjoy Local Cooked Chicken Pieces come in 150g packs, as do the Cooked Chicken Slices.

The Cooked Chicken Fillets are sold in larger 300g packs.

All three products share the same batch code 5126 and use-by date of May 21, 2025.

The Food Standards Agency has confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in these products, prompting the recall.

Listeria symptoms can include high temperature, muscle ache, chills, and diarrhoea, similar to flu. In rare cases, the infection can cause more severe complications such as meningitis.

The World Health Organisation notes that foodborne listeriosis is "one of the most serious and severe foodborne diseases" with a "high rate of death".

Certain groups are particularly vulnerable, including people over 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, infants under one month, and those with weakened immune systems.

SPAR has taken action by recalling the affected products and displaying point of sale notices where they were sold.

These notices explain the reason for the recall and provide guidance to customers.

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected chicken products are advised not to eat them.

Instead, they should return the products to the store where they were bought to receive a full refund.

The Food Standards Agency has issued a Product Recall Information Notice to alert consumers about the problem.

Customers with any queries or concerns about the recall can contact SPAR Customer Services on 0289 034 2733.

The recall follows standard procedures for food safety issues where products are withdrawn from shelves and customers asked to return items.

This recall is being managed under the Food Standards Agency's product safety protocols.

SPAR has emphasised the importance of returning affected products rather than consuming them due to the potential health risks associated with Listeria contamination.
