Experts are urging drivers to make use of the method

Drivers are being urged to get a cheaper MOT test using a little-known method with millions looking to book a test this month.

Experts have warned that millions of Britons will be scrambling to book an MOT test in the next few weeks, with the rush being described as “Nutty November”.

The surge in MOT test inquiries comes as a result of new vehicle registrations in September and a backlog of test deferrals during the pandemic.

However, one expert has called on drivers to look into other options when booking their MOT test, which could save them time and money.

David Kottaun, operations manager at Scrap Car Comparison, said very few people knew that many councils have their own MOT testing stations.

These are generally for council vehicles, buses and vans, but, by law, the testing stations must be open to the public.

He said: “While these centres generally only carry out tests (and not any subsequent checks), they often will charge a cheaper fee for tests than mainstream garages and test providers.

“Not only this but, due to the fact they will not benefit if your car has to undergo repair work (unlike mainstream garages), council test centres can be trusted to be impartial when it comes to failing or passing your MOT test - which could also save you money in the long run.”

However, drivers are recommended to consider whether their vehicle is likely to need major repairs before they look to book at a council test centre.

A law introduced in 2018 states that cars which receive a “dangerous” fail are not able to be driven until they are fixed.

This could stem from major issues like loose brake discs, a crack in the windscreen and oil leaks.

The expert warned that drivers could end up having to pay additional fees to get the vehicle transported to a garage to get repairs done in the event that is designated as “dangerous”.

David Kottaun added: “To find your nearest council MOT centre, you can check your local council’s website - or contact your local council directly.

“You can also find a list of the UK’s council MOT test centres on the UK MOT website.

“Also keep in mind that under law, the current maximum price for an MOT for a car which can fit up to eight passengers is £54.85 - and so regardless of where you’re booking your MOT, you should not ever be charged more than this.”

Motorists can sign up for a DVSA reminder service which will inform car drivers a month before their test is due.

Lorry, bus and large trailer drivers are given a two-month reminder before their next MOT test.

If someone is driving a vehicle without a valid MOT, they could be slapped with a £1,000 fine.

If the vehicle is in a dangerous condition, motorists could be hit with a £2,500 penalty and they will be unable to drive the vehicle until it has been repaired.
