Getting started on a steady weight loss routine can prove tricky, but one fitness guru has opened up on how she managed to begin the process.

Coach Liza Marie said that incorporating one simple task into her day-to-day life was enough to get going.

During lockdown, the TikToker started incorporating daily walks into her routine, which is shown to facilitate weight loss, depending on the duration and intensity of the walk.

Previously, she was “feeling exhausted and completely stuck”, weighing around 21st 6lb. She described herself as an “avid binge eater” with a “serious fast food addiction”.

Explaining how she shed the pounds, she told followers: “I didn’t do anything extreme. I started small, and I just kept going. You don’t need a perfect plan, you just need to start.”

In a separate video, she said that “something is better than nothing”, after having just left the gym after 20 minutes because she “just didn’t have it in her”.

“I had full intentions to get in a full cardio workout and arm workout, but I just didn’t have it in me. I’m still proud of myself that I walked and that I showed up,” she said.

“I lost 10st not by being perfect but by showing up every single day in some way. Small steps lead to big results. I never gave up and always did something every single day.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, a combination of exercise alongside a calorie deficit can facilitate weight loss more effectively than just exercise alone. Diet also plays a significant role in losing pounds.

Daily walks are crucial to maintain weight as well, helping to burn off calories. The clinic estimated that a simple half an hour of brisk walking could burn 150 extra calories each day.

It is recommended to get around 150 minutes of “moderate aerobic activity” every week - or at least 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity within the same timeframe.

The clinic says: “For even more health benefits, get 300 minutes a week or more of moderate aerobic activity. Exercising this much may help with weight loss or keeping off lost weight.

“But even small amounts of physical activity can be helpful. Being active for short periods of time during the day can add up and have health benefits.”

However, the experts at the clinic warned that balance was important and that excessive exercise could “raise your risk of soreness, injury and burnout”.

It is first recommended for newbies to start out with short walks or walking at a light intensity and then gradually progress to more moderate activity.
