Daily exercise is one of the best ways to create good habits and boost motivation when trying to lose weight.
Walking is a simple yet effective form of exercise that can help you achieve your weight loss goals.
Weight loss experts at Voy have shared valuable advice to help people get started on their fitness journey through walking.
The experts said: "Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all for daily step counts. Your target will depend on your weight, activity level, age, and other factors, but a widely accepted target is 10,000 steps. This is about the same as an hour and 40 minutes of walking or eight kilometres, or if you walked from Big Ben to London Bridge and back."
Setting realistic targets initially is crucial to avoid discouragement. Experts suggested starting with 4,000 to 5,000 steps and gradually increasing as it becomes manageable to supercharge fat-burning.
This approach helps maintain motivation while still providing a challenge. Remember that your overall step goal doesn't need to be completed in one go. You'd be surprised how quickly your step count increases by incorporating movement throughout your day.
Making walking enjoyable is key to increasing your step count and sticking with your goals.
Try getting off the bus one stop early or taking the stairs instead of the lift.
Offer to walk a friend or family member's dog, find a walking buddy, or join a walking group.
Park your car further away from your destination when driving is unavoidable. Getting steps in early morning can boost motivation when energy levels are higher, the experts added.
While health apps with step counters are convenient, they may not count all steps if you don't always carry your phone, so a fitness watch or tracker could help.
Choosing routes with inclines and declines makes walking more engaging and effective for weight loss.
Walking uphill activates leg muscles more intensely than flat terrain, targeting glutes, hamstrings and quads while increasing heart rate. Any activity that increases breathing rate contributes to weight loss by boosting metabolism and burning more calories.
Walking offers numerous health benefits beyond weight loss. The experts added: "Like any aerobic exercise, walking supports heart health, helps regulate blood sugar, and can help your mental health.
