A dieter has revealed the dramatic transformation she underwent after changing her diet

People are generally well-versed on the benefits of cutting out sugar, with its dangers linked to a host of chronic conditions like diabetes.

But it can offer more immediate benefits too, helping the body circumvent the consequences of overeating.

In a recent TikTok, Angelina Marie revealed that she lost a staggering 5st 11lb after abstaining from sugar and carbohydrates.

She told her viewers: “I went from 14st 13lb to 9st 2lb in one year by removing sugar and carbs, and I have never felt this good."

To maintain a healthy weight, the World Health Organisation (WHO) strongly recommends reducing sugar intake to less than 10 per cent of total energy.

This number is based on analysis of the latest scientific evidence, which shows, first, that adults who consume less sugar have lower body weight and, second, that increasing the amount of sugar in the diet is associated with weight increase.

Speaking to GB News, nutritional therapist Alison Bladh broke down the scientific relationship between sugar and weight gain, warning that the belly is most at risk.

"Visceral fat is strongly associated with insulin resistance, meaning the body struggles to regulate blood sugar effectively," she said.

“When insulin levels remain high, the body is primed to store fat around the abdomen. Strategies that improve insulin sensitivity are therefore central to belly fat loss."

According to Bladh, these include prioritising protein at meals, reducing refined carbohydrates and sugars, choosing fibre-rich foods and spacing meals evenly to avoid repeated blood sugar spikes.

She added: “Unlike low-calorie dieting, which can slow metabolism and increase muscle loss, improving insulin sensitivity targets the root cause of abdominal fat storage."

Carbohydrates require careful consideration, too, as they can also spark glucose spikes.

Put simply, refined carbohydrates are quickly broken down into sugar inside the body and spike blood sugar, preventing the body from staying full for long.

Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf, MS, RD, told GB News: “Carbohydrates that hinder weight loss are those that are high in sugars and low in fibre, such as sugary snacks, white bread, pastries and other highly processed foods.

“These carbs cause quick spikes in blood sugar and insulin, which can lead to increased fat storage.

“Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, legumes, and vegetables, support weight loss by providing sustained energy and increasing satiety.

“They digest more slowly than simple carbohydrates, helping to maintain stable blood sugar levels and reduce hunger. This can help prevent overeating and help support a healthy weight.”
