Protein-rich meals can contribute to weight loss

A high metabolism will burn calories and fat more quickly, and how effective yours is is largely out of your control.

However, research has shown that high-protein foods can contribute to a quicker metabolism.

There are many studies that prove this, including one published in the National Library of Medicine. It looked at a small group of 10 adults of a normal weight.

It found those who followed a high protein, low-fat diet saw their metabolisms increase compared to those on a high carbohydrate, low-fat diet.

Wellness expert Dr Nicole Maholy agreed with this when she discussed how best to lose weight and burn fat.

She told GB News: "My best advice for weight loss and fat burning include strategies that stabilise blood sugar and minimise insulin release.

"High blood sugar and insulin levels encourage fat storage rather than fat burning, so it's imperative to avoid blood sugar spikes that trigger insulin release.

"To do this, focus on getting enough protein in the diet. Protein keeps blood sugar stable, requires minimal insulin, and helps build healthy muscle tissue, which improves metabolism and fat burning."

She added the optimal amount dieters should try to get, stating: "To get enough protein, aim for 0.7 to one gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight."

There are many natural sources of protein and it is most commonly found in foods such as meat, fish, dairy products, beans, nuts and tofu. Supplements, such as protein powders or bars, can help Britons to reach their goals.

Not only can this positively affect the metabolism, but protein is known as satiating. This means dietiers will feel full more quickly and are less likely to overeat.

"This is much easier to stick with than the outdated weight loss dieting methods that can leave you feeling hungry and weak."

The expert added it is wise to eat a protein-rich dinner. She said: "Firstly, I recommend having a protein-rich dinner at least three hours before bed, and then avoid eating anything afterwards.

"Protein helps keep you satisfied, stabilises blood sugar levels, promotes better sleep and supports muscle growth, which in turn enhances fat burning."
