Walking is the ideal way to consistently shed tummy fat. Many will be relieved to know no running needed

Belly fat is stubborn and often seems impossible to torch. However, it's possible to get rid of with a calorie-burning exercise.

However, this does not mean spending hours and hours in the gym. According to a fitness expert, walking is an effective way to lose belly fat "for good".

Jeremy Ethier said on his YouTube channel: "Belly fat is really easy to gain and notoriously hard to lose. It can seem as though no matter what you eat and which exercises you try, the belly fat just won't budge.

"Unfortunately, with the exception of surgery, there is currently no proven method of being able to spot reduce fat from the belly. There is an exercise, however, that is incredibly under-utilised yet powerfully effective when it comes to losing belly fat."

Running, rowing, cycling and HIIT workouts are all ways to burn calories "very quickly". However, the "overwhelming majority of people can't actually stick with traditional cardio long enough for fat loss to reach stubborn areas".

For most of us, walking is a very manageable way to torch fat over time. Walking is simple, easy to incorporate into the day, and doesn't require too much motivation.

The fitness expert said: "If you crunch the numbers, you'll actually find that the calories burned from simply walking can very quickly add up to a meaningful amount."

He explained that a 12st 2lb person walking 3mph can burn around 3.4 calories per minute (and around 200 calories an hour). If a person does this three times per week, this amounts to 600 calories. And over the course of a year, this amounts to 31,200 calories burned, which amounts to around 9lbs of fat.

While committing to an intense running, rowing or cycling regime may work for a while, it's difficult for most people to sustain this, which is why a slow and steady method like walking often is more effective for the average slimmer, as they will keep up the habit more consistently.

For this reason, Jeremy said that walking is the "number one exercise to lose belly fat".

Walking more steps can be easily incorporated into a person's day. The expert suggested consciously parking further away from your destination when driving so you can walk the rest of the way. Britons can also make necessary walks longer, for example by taking an alternative route to the bathroom at work.

Britons can also finish off their workouts with a 10-minute incline walk, and aim to do another 10-minute walk after every meal. Whenever possible, take the stairs as opposed to escalators and lifts.

To make walking more enjoyable - and to make them go faster - slimmers can listen to podcasts or music while they're out on a stroll.

The expert referenced a study where subjects working in an office added just five minutes of walking per hour into their day. Over a year, this amounted to 9lbs of additional fat loss.

On non-office days, people who want to lose weight could up their step count, for example, by walking with a friend at the weekend or walking to a social event you would usually drive to.

It's important to note though, that while walking - and exercise in general - is effective for belly fat loss, working out must be used in conjunction with eating well.

The expert urged slimmers to use their diet as the primary way to create a calorie calorie deficit, then supplement this with exercise.

For Britons keen on going walking for weight loss, adding a simple arm movement can torch even more calories.

Women in their 40s and 50s going through menopause could also lose weight by avoiding a carbohydrate.
