Petrol and diesel prices in the UK should fall in the coming weeks and months

Russia has extended its ban on exporting gasoline, diesel and other fuels, as drivers in the UK could see petrol prices fall in the coming weeks.

President Vladimir Putin has overseen the extension of a temporary ban on the export of motor gasoline from Russia until February 28, 2026.

It comes as the Russian Government continues to "work to maintain stability in the domestic fuel market".

The Russian government resolutions apply to all exporters, including direct producers, as it continues to fight back against backlash from its invasion of Ukraine.

Another decree passed by President Putin's government extends the ban on the export of diesel, marine fuel and other gas oils until February 28, 2026.

Russia has been battered by sanctions imposed by countries around the world in response to its invasion and continued attacks on Ukraine.

As the war enters its fourth year, and a peace deal appears to still be distant, the Russian government continues to fight back against sanctions.

Russia has been forced to deal with fuel shortages in recent months, as reported by the Kyiv Post, with the Far East and occupied Crimea dealing with low fuel levels.

Despite the impact of Russia's invasion on global oil costs, experts are predicting that motorists in the UK could see petrol and diesel prices fall.

According to RAC Fuel Watch, petrol, diesel, super unleaded and premium diesel prices "should fall sharply".

At present, drivers are paying 135.61p per litre for petrol and 144.53p for diesel, although premium variants of the fuel will be more expensive.

While motorists have been dealing with expensive costs in recent months, prices are falling, especially in Northern Ireland.

Drivers benefit from the Consumer Council Fuel Price Checker, which displays the cheapest petrol and diesel prices around the country.

Newtownabbey currently has the cheapest petrol price at just 127.9p per litre, while drivers in Cookstown benefit from the lower diesel cost at £1.33.

The rest of the UK will also benefit from a fuel price checker system in the coming months as the Government prepares to roll out the Fuel Finder tool.

This will work in the same way as the Consumer Council's scheme, with analysis suggesting that drivers could save between one and six pence per litre when they fill up.
