The RAC predicts that petrol could drop to around 156p a litre within the next week

Petrol and diesel drivers are finally seeing prices fall at the pumps following months of near-record costs stemming from the Iran war.

The latest data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that motorists are paying an average of 156.37p per litre for petrol and 177.89p for diesel.

Since peaking at the end of May, petrol has fallen by 3p per litre, with a 2p drop being seen in the last week alone.

After reaching its highest price since the start of the Iran war on May 28, motorists are saving an average of £2 per tank.

Diesel drivers are seeing faster price drops, with average costs falling by 3.3p over the last seven days, although they are still 35.5p per litre more expensive than at the start of the conflict.

When paying for an average 55-litre tank of fuel in a standard family car, falling costs have helped drivers save £7.50 since peaking on April 15.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said Britons would be "relieved" to see prices falling at the pumps since oil costs have gone down.

He added: "We expect unleaded to fall another few pence a litre from its current average of just over 156p in the next week or so."

The expert continued, saying: "Diesel's downward trajectory is far faster, having dropped more than 3p in the last week and nearly 14p since its conflict peak of 191.54p at the end of May.

"Our analysis of the wholesale market shows it should continue to fall to below 170p a litre."
