Insurers can lower premiums for cars with dash cams installed

Drivers can save up to £250 on their car insurance costs by installing an add-on into their vehicles before hitting the road.

The cost savings can be found by installing dash cams inside cars that capture every journey a driver takes on video.

Dash cams provide video evidence in accidents and can help insurance companies get a better understanding of the incident when choosing to pay out.

They can also help deter theft and other crimes by recording incidents which can later be used as evidence.

A Freedom of Information request recently found that there has been a 77 per cent increase in dash cam submissions to traffic police between 2021 and the end of 2023.

Dash cams can be purchased for as little as £32, with higher-end models costing more than £250, depending on the features and brand.

Basic models have loop recording while mid-range models provide higher resolution and GPS logging. High-end models include advanced features like dual cameras and cloud storage.

According to experts, dash cams can lead to insurance discounts of up to £250, as some insurers offer reduced premium rates for vehicles fitted with them.

Motoring experts at Moneybarn Car Finance explained that insurers find dash cams a valuable tool for assessing claims more accurately.

Due to the technology providing clear evidence of what happened during an incident, this can help prevent fraudulent insurance claims.

The experts said: “Learner drivers often pay high insurance premiums due to their limited driving experience.

“Using a dash cam might make it easier to claim on your insurance if you're in an accident that wasn't your fault. It could also mean paying less for insurance, as some companies offer lower premiums to drivers with dash cams.”

When choosing a dash cam, drivers should look for one that offers good video quality and reliable storage options.

Some dash cams also come equipped with GPS tracking and parking mode, which provide detailed data insurers may find useful.

The expert added: “Learner drivers should remember that although a dash cam can be helpful, it's crucial to gain driving experience by following road safety rules.

“Driving safely, along with using a reliable dash cam, can help reduce insurance costs in the long run.”
