A motorist who claimed his electric Jaguar had gone "rogue" at 100mph on a motorway, which required the police to ram him off the road, has been charged with a driving offence.

In March 2024, Nathan Owen, 32, reported that he lost the ability to apply his brakes after overtaking another vehicle on the M62 motorway between Liverpool and Manchester.

He was forced to call 999, with roads policing units attempting to intercept the runaway vehicle as it reached speeds of up to 100mph.

The police response saw the £80,000 Jaguar I-Pace surrounded by police for 35 minutes before the vehicle was finally brought to a stop.

Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were able to bring the vehicle to a "safe stop".

During the incident, North West Motorway Police noted that it had closed lanes three and four on the M62 between Junction 11 for Birchwood and Junction 12 for Eccles.

In the aftermath of the incident, Owen spoke of his fears that the vehicle issues could lead to him hitting an innocent person, or that he would die himself.

However, police have today announced that Owen has been charged with driving offences after an extensive investigation.

Merseyside Police added that he has been charged with dangerous driving, causing a public nuisance and two counts of fraud by false representation.

In a statement, the force added: "We have charged a man following an incident involving a black Jaguar I-Pace car on the M62 in March 2024.

"On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 6, officers from the force's roads policing unit were called to help stop a vehicle safely on the eastbound carriageway after the driver called 999, reporting his vehicle was out of control and he could not brake while travelling on the M58/M57 and M62 motorways.

"Following an extensive investigation, we have charged Nathan Owen, 32, of The Grove, Prestatyn, North Wales, with dangerous driving, causing a public nuisance and two counts of fraud by false representation."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The man will appear at Liverpool and Knowsley Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, August 13.

Speaking at the time, a spokesperson for Jaguar Land Rover noted that it had worked alongside Merseyside Police.

They said: "Following a detailed investigation in partnership with the Merseyside Police and other authorities, we understand an individual has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance, relating to the incident on the M62 on Wednesday, March 6."

The spokesperson added that JLR aims to investigate all reports of issues relating to product safety.

Owen had claimed that the brakes had failed and he could not slow down or stop the car, leading to the dramatic rescue effort from the police.

The spokesperson noted that the company would continue to cooperate with Merseyside Police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
