A serious minibus crash has left 17 people injured in West Yorkshire, which led to a major road being shut for a number of hours.

National Highways: Yorkshire reported that the A1 had been closed northbound between Junction 40 at Darrington and Junction 41 at the M62 following the collision.


West Yorkshire Police said a crash had taken place involving a minibus and two other vehicles.

As a result, seventeen people were taken to hospital, with all emergency services attending the scene.

The people involved in the accident were taken to Leeds General Infirmary, Pinderfields and York hospitals, with no fatalities being reported.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it was "under extreme pressure" following the crash which took place on Saturday evening.

A number of emergency services were involved with the air ambulance being deployed and a hazardous area response team seen at the scene.

Yorkshire Ambulance released a statement confirming that an accident had taken place and what was being done to help those affected.

It stated: "We received a call at 19.06 to a road traffic incident on the A1 near Darrington, West Yorkshire.

"We responded to the incident with a wide range of resources and 17 patients were taken to hospitals in the region."

For around an hour after the incident, the northbound and southbound roads were closed as police dealt with the "serious collision".

All lanes on the northbound road were finally opened at around 3am this morning, with National Highways thanking drivers for their patience.


Throughout the evening, yellow warning signs helped those stuck in traffic follow a diversion route to get them back on their journey.

Videos posted on social media, which were supposedly taken at the scene, showed a minibus on its side along the hard shoulder of the dual carriageway.

National Highways had warned drivers of other delays on the network earlier in the evening, updating motorists on social media site X.

It stated that planned closures would be taking place between 8pm on Saturday evening and 6am on Sunday morning.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The roads affected included the M180 in both directions between Junction three and two, as well as the M1 southbound between J44 and J42.
