The Duke of Richmond has pioneered the use of sustainable fuels at Goodwood Revival

Experts have backed the use of sustainable fuels as a historic British festival gears up to use cleaner fuels for its classic car events this month.

Goodwood Revival is one of the most popular motoring festivals in the UK and around the world, with thousands of enthusiasts set to descend on the Goodwood House estate later this week.

For the first time ever, races at Revival will exclusively use sustainable fuel, as organisers back the use of the fuels as being a "landmark moment".

Across the whole weekend, competitors will use a fuel that has a minimum of 70 per cent advanced sustainable components, following the FIA's current requirements.

As part of the "Revive and Thrive" ethos, Goodwood will implement it as a drop-in fuel, meaning motorists are not required to modify their cars, with no compromise on race performance.

Sustainable fuels have been used at the Goodwood Festival for a few years. Notably, the 1925 Bentley Speed Model using sustainable fuel won the Rudge-Whitworth Cup at the 2023 Revival.

Goodwood Revival also highlighted its first sustainably-fuelled race, seeing a host of pre-1966 Porsche 911s take to the track in the Fordwater Trophy.

The move to sustainable fuels has been backed by several key voices in the motoring world including F1 champions Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button, Formula E driver Karun Chandhok and acting legend Rowan Atkinson.

The Duke of Richmond, who founded Goodwood Revival and the Festival of Speed, highlighted the use of sustainable fuels as a way to keep classic cars on the road.

He added: "Sustainability is a very, very, very important part of what we do at Goodwood.

"So, Revival with its Revive and Thrive message, being the first motorsport event in the world to run on completely sustainable synthetic fuel, we felt was a really strong message," he told This is Money.

According to data from the Department of Transport's Renewable Fuel Statistics report, when using sustainable fuels compared to fossil fuels, there is an 83 per cent CO2 saving.

The Goodwood Revival, which takes place from Friday, September 6, until Sunday, September 8, will see sustainable fuel developers engage in a panel discussion about the use of fuel at the festival.

The Duke of Richmond said he was "proud" and "delighted" to usher in the widespread use of sustainable fuels at Goodwood.

The Historic and Classic Vehicles Alliance (HCVA) hosted its first Sustainable Liquid Fuels Round Table last month to support the transition to cleaner fuels.

It states that it considers sustainable liquid fuels to be a "vital piece of the puzzle" to ensure classic cars can stay on the road indefinitely, especially amid the switch to net zero motoring.

The HCVA praised Goodwood Road Racing for boosting the use of sustainable fuels on a global scale, as highlighted by its Members' Meeting and the Revival Festival.

The campaign group wants to ensure that the Government and important legislators see sustainable fuels as a viable option, similar to the view of battery electric technology.
