Volvo owners now have 'even easier access to one of the most recognised fast charging networks'

Thousands of drivers are set to benefit from a new partnership which could give them access to a massive charging network across Europe.

Volvo has confirmed that drivers using the company's app will be able to charge their electric vehicles at Tesla Supercharger stations.

The move, which will take effect from the fourth quarter of this year, will give drivers access to more than 20,000 ultra-rapid chargers across the continent.

Drivers will be able to benefit from the new charging capabilities across 29 European countries, including the United Kingdom.

Volvo is expected to provide further information on timings, car models and markets at a later stage.

With the European Tesla Supercharger rollout, owners of certain models will be able to use Tesla Superchargers, notably EX30, EX40, EC40, EX60, EX90 and ES90 electric vehicles.

Alejandro Castro Pérez, head of energy solutions at Volvo Cars, said: "Volvo drivers already have access to over three million charging points globally through the Volvo app.

"Adding Tesla Superchargers in Europe means they now have even easier access to one of the most recognised fast charging networks."

The Volvo chief said the Swedish brand's goal was to make charging "simple and effortless" for its drivers through a "seamless" ecosystem.

Volvo hinted that it would also transition selected vehicles to the North American Charging System (NACS/SAE J3400) in the future.

This will include key Asia-Pacific markets, including Japan and South Korea, by the end of the decade.

The Gothenburg-based car manufacturer has supported calls for charging standardisation to make it as easy as possible for drivers to recharge in public.

Volvo owners can already use the brand's app at more than 120,000 chargers in North America, and 1.2 million points across Europe.

There are 2,348 Tesla Supercharger devices across the UK, according to Zapmap data, making it the fifth-largest rapid or ultra-rapid charging network.

Tesla Superchargers have 8.4 per cent of the UK's rapid and ultra-rapid charging market share, falling just behind InstaVolt, BP Pulse, Osprey and MFG EV Power.

Globally, there are more than 80,000 Tesla Superchargers, allowing drivers to recharge up to 172 miles in just 15 minutes.
