The Dacia Hipster Concept could have a battery electric range of around 150km

Dacia has unveiled a new concept electric vehicle that could cost just £13,000 as it looks to make electric mobility cheaper for millions of motorists around the world.

The new Dacia Hipster Concept is the latest offering from the Romanian brand, which aims to halve the carbon footprint of electric vehicles.

The concept car attempts to redesign the current view of electric vehicles with an overhauled design in a bid to "break with automotive connections".

Dacia has called the Hipster Concept the "popular car of tomorrow" and follows a goal to make electric mobility cheaper and more accessible to all.

The Hipster Concept will be just three metres long, 1.53 metres high and 1.55 metres wide, with a maximum boot capacity of a staggering 500 litres.

The maximum speed is believed to be around 90km/h and has a range of around 150km, making it suitable for urban commutes.

Dacia pointed to data which shows that 94 per cent of motorists in France travel less than 24 miles per day.

During the unveiling of the new Hipster Concept, CEO Katrin Adt said the vehicle was a "bold vision for local, affordable and everyday mobility".

She added that the smaller vehicle could cost less than €15,000 or £13,045, making it one of the cheapest electric vehicles in the world.

The former head of Smart and Mercedes-Benz executive added that Dacia would be ready to mass-produce the vehicle if the opportunity were to arise.

Romain Gauvin, Head of Advanced Design and Exterior Design at Dacia, explained: "This is the most Dacia-esque project that I have ever worked on.

"It has the same societal impact as the Logan did 20 years ago, and it involves inventing something that does not exist today."

The concept comes equipped with "only the essentials as standard", which can be customised with YouClip accessories on the dashboard, door panel and the boot interior.

The YouClip accessories can be placed in 11 different anchor points around the car, allowing drivers to include cup holders, armrests, ceiling lights and more.

The four-seater Hipster Concept is designed in a way that has been described as a "block sitting firmly on four wheels at the four corners", without an overhang.

Mr Gauvin added: "Our ambition in reinventing the true people’s car was to give it a distinctive and memorable design. A car that can be sketched in three strokes of a pencil."

Dacia already holds the title for having one of the most affordable EVs on the market, with the Dacia Spring, which retails from £14,995.

The Spring has a battery range of 140 miles, 65HP of motor power and a charging time from 20 to 80 per cent in just 45 minutes.

The compact city car is popular among professionals living in urban environments who tend to travel shorter distances and less frequently.

While the Spring is the only electric vehicle that Dacia sells in the UK, drivers can get their hands on hybrid models, including the Jogger, Duster and Bigster.
