A popular car brand is expected to delay the release of its highly anticipated electric vehicle amid fears that driver demand for EVs is waning.

According to Reuters, Alfa Romeo could postpone the launch of its new Stelvio SUV amid a strategy reset, with sources citing "tepid demand" for EVs.

The Stelvio large SUV was expected to be produced at its Cassino Assembly Plant in Piedimonte San Germano, Italy, which is one of the brand's largest production facilities.

One source said deliveries of the Stelvio would not begin before September or October next year.

Original plans suggested that the SUV would be unveiled before the end of this year, with sales starting in the first quarter of 2026.

Another source told Reuters that the Stellantis-owned brand was developing a hybrid version of the model.

This is despite reported plans that it would only be sold as an electric vehicle, as Alfa Romeo looks to develop its zero emission offering.

Experts have warned that this could have repercussions for the Italian government, with a potential delay amid plans to revive production and jobs.

A spokesperson for Stellantis said the Italian plan "includes an expansion and reshaping of activities in the country, in light of current market conditions, uncertainties surrounding EU regulations, and the impact of tariffs".

So far this year, Alfa Romeo has seen a staggering 112 per cent increase in UK sales compared to last year, based on data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

It has already sold 950 vehicles this year, a huge increase compared to the 448 sold at the same time last year.

The Italian brand also controls a modest 0.14 per cent of the total market share, compared to the 0.07 per cent in 2024.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Alfa Romeo currently only has one electric vehicle in its UK lineup, the Junior Elettrica, with future plans now up in the air.

Starting from £33,905, the Junior Elettrica has an electric range of 255 miles, with drivers able to charge from 20 to 80 per cent in less than 30 minutes.

Drivers who opt for an electric Alfa Romeo could receive a complimentary Octopus Energy EV home charger and installation from Ohme, in addition to an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty.

Its popular Stelvio model is still available with a petrol or diesel powertrain, while maintaining several hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

There have also been some concerns around President Donald Trump's 25 per cent tariffs on the import of foreign vehicles to the United States.

The US accounts for around 15 per cent of Alfa Romeo's sales, with sources warning that tariffs could impact sales of its European-made cars.

Reuters reported that Stellantis had hired consultant McKinsey to advise on the tariff impact on its Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands.

Speaking last week, President Trump said automakers, including Tesla, must build cars and parts in the US, although a full announcement has not yet been made.
