M60 traffic: Eight-vehicle crash and fuel spill forces motorway to remain closed for second day

Drivers are being warned to avoid a major motorway after it was closed for the second day in a row following a devastating eight-vehicle pile-up.
National Highways is urging motorists to be cautious on the M60 in Greater Manchester after a collision involving four heavy goods vehicles and four cars.
The M60 is closed in both directions between J25 Bredbury Interchange (Bredbury, A560) and J1 Pyramid Roundabout (Stockport (Cen), A5145).
The stretch of motorway was closed overnight in both directions with emergency works ongoing.

Long traffic delays remain along the M60

National Highways: North-West reported that emergency repairs are needed for the barrier and bridge parapet, with contractors working throughout the day.
One of the heavy goods vehicles involved in the crash crossed through the central reservation barrier and struck a number of lamp columns.
Another one of the HGVs involved in the accident "shed its load of beer barrels" onto the road, which can be seen in images posted by National Highways on social media.
Several fuel tanks ruptured in the collision, resulting in a large amount of diesel across the carriageway in both directions.

While recovery work is complete, emergency resurfacing work remains ongoing at the scene, although all road users caught within the closures have been released.
Greater Manchester Police confirm that no arrests have been made, while Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service reported that three of its fire engines had attended the scene.
A spokesperson said: "Crews arrived quickly to make the three cars safe. Three of the nine casualties involved were transferred to Stepping Hill Hospital for minor injuries.
"Firefighters were in attendance for roughly three hours."

National Highways has clarified that the M60 remains closed and responded to frustrated drivers on when the motorway could be reopened.
A spokesperson said: "There is no estimated time of reopening. Emergency works will need to be undertaken on the road surface before it can be reopened. Thank you for your patience."
The closed motorway has also caused chaos for the Bee Network of buses around Greater Manchester, forcing them to divert.
In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Bee Network said: "Towards Stockport only, services are diverting via Mount Road, Barlow Road and Longford Road West in both directions."

National Highways has set out diversion routes for motorists to avoid the closed roads and congestion.
Clockwise (follow the route marked with a hollow diamond symbol and then a solid triangle symbol)
- Leave M60 clockwise at Jct 25
- At the roundabout, take the third exit onto the A560
- Follow the A560 westbound and continue past J26, remaining on the A560
- At the Portwood Interchange (M60 J27), take the third exit to remain on the A560 (note: diversion route symbol changes to solid triangle at this point)
- Continue on to the A560 to the roundabout with the A5145 and take the fourth exit onto Travis Brow
- Keep left on the A5145 and turn onto the A5145
- Remain on the A5145 to J1 of the M60 and at the roundabout take the third exit to re-join the M60 clockwise
Anti-clockwise (follow the route marked with a solid square symbol on local road signs)
- Leave the M60 anti-clockwise at J1
- At the roundabout, take the second exit onto A5145 (Travis Brow)
- At A5145/A560 roundabout, take the first exit onto A560 eastbound
- At A560/M60 Jct 27 roundabout, take the third exit onto A560 eastbound
- At A560/M60 Jct 25 roundabout, take the first exit and rejoin the M60 anti-clockwise.
