M4 chaos: Drivers face standstill traffic and road havoc as huge vehicle fire shuts major motorway

Motorists are dealing with rush hour chaos this morning following a massive vehicle fire, which has halted traffic for the last hour.
The M4 in Berkshire is closed eastbound between Junction 14 (Hungerford) and Junction 13 (Chieveley/Newbury) due to a vehicle fire.
National Highways has confirmed that its Traffic Officers are working alongside the fire service to assist with traffic management.
Since the incident was reported, traffic officers have reopened the westbound carriageway between J13 and J14.

Traffic maps show that delays on the M4 are likely to continue for at least an hour.
Normal traffic conditions are expected to return at around 10am, although this could be amended depending on the recovery operation.
Posting on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, National Highways: East provided an update for impacted motorists.
It stated that two of three lanes on the M4 between J14 and J13 remain closed, with average delays of 90 minutes.

A spokesperson for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service told GB News: "At 7.14am on Tuesday, October 14, we received reports of a road traffic collision on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 near Hungerford.
"Two Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newbury Fire Station were sent to the scene alongside the Heavy Rescue Unit from Theale Community Fire Station and a crew from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
"Upon arrival, crews discovered a collision involving five vehicles, two of which were on fire.

"Crews used the Heavy Rescue Unit to separate the vehicles before firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus extinguished the fires with two hose reels."
It also confirmed that two people involved in the incident were taken into the care of South Central Ambulance Service.
Crews were at the scene for approximately one hour before handing back over to Thames Valley Police.

- Turn left at the roundabout and follow the A4 to the A34 interchange
- At the A34 roundabout, use the second exit and follow the A34 to the M4 J13 interchange
- Turn right at the roundabout and rejoin the M4 eastbound
