Many drivers have called for electric vehicle charging to be made simpler for motorists

OVO Energy has become the first chargepoint operator in the UK to offer a subscription model to help more people switch to an electric vehicle.

The energy supplier is introducing two new subscription services for electric vehicle owners that will cover both home and public charging every month.

It comes as research from OVO Energy reveals that half of Britons want to go electric, and ditch their old petrol and diesel cars.

A further three-fifths (61 per cent) said they were more likely to opt for a zero emission vehicle compared to five years ago.

However, a staggering 79 per cent of motorists who already own an electric car say they want EV charging to be simplified.

Many drivers have cited the difference in price between home and public chargers, especially if drivers do not have access to a charger on their driveway.

There have also been calls for Labour to slash the rate of VAT on public chargers from 20 per cent to just five per cent, to match the rate applied to home chargers.

The new monthly plan will give drivers access to smart charging at home and vouchers to use on more than 400,000 chargers throughout the UK and across Europe.

The Standard monthly plan could save motorists an impressive £340 per year, with a monthly cost of £27.50.

This will entitle drivers to 700 miles of smart charging at home per month, public charging vouchers and EV charger insurance against accidental damage, theft and vandalism.

The Standard plan is less than a third of the average monthly car fuel cost for petrol or diesel cars, which is around £91.67.

Drivers can also opt for the Premium monthly plan for £37.50, which enables them to save a staggering £460 a year.

As part of the offer, drivers will receive 1,000 miles of smart home charging, public charging vouchers, EV charger insurance, a free annual battery health check from ClearWatt and a 15 per cent discount on KwikFit Club tyres.

Alex Thwaites, Director of EV at OVO, said: "We need to make EVs the easy choice for drivers. This means making them super affordable to run and simple to charge.

"Charge Anytime monthly plans offer the best of both worlds - the flexibility to charge anytime, from anywhere, with the confidence of knowing exactly what you’ll pay each month."

OVO customers have saved more than £25million on their electric vehicle charging since the launch of its Charge Anytime scheme.

The monthly Charge Anytime plan will launch on November 4, 2025, with drivers being able to sign up from today via the OVO website.

According to data from Zapmap, there are 85,163 public charging devices across the UK, with more than 120,000 connectors.

There are also estimated to be more than one million chargers installed at homes and workplaces across the UK, with more expected to be added to the network in the coming years.

Many industry experts are hoping for 300,000 public chargers to be installed by the end of the decade to support the transition to electric vehicles.
