More than eight million motorists now have a 'Driver and vehicles account'

Millions of drivers are being urged by the DVLA to take action to ensure they are not caught out by tax issues.

The Driver and Vehicles Licensing Agency (DVLA) has confirmed that eight million people have signed up to the "Driver and vehicles account".

The milestone is the latest step for the DVLA in its bid to get motorists to use its digital services.

The account allows people to see information about their driving licences, receive MOT and tax reminders, and view their driving record.

The DVLA frequently takes to social media to urge drivers to make use of the account to set tax reminders, with the service also allowing drivers to check their tax rates.

Announcing on social media site X, the DVLA wrote: "8 million motorists have now signed up for a Driver and vehicles account!

"For a quick and secure way to see your driver and vehicle details all in one place, and to opt in for vehicle tax reminders by text or email, set up yours today."

Motorists can select to receive vehicle tax reminders by email or SMS text, rather than by post.

Drivers who have chosen to tax their vehicle by Direct Debit do not need to sign up or receive a digital V11 reminder because it will renew automatically.

Commenting on the launch of the scheme, Julie Lennard, chief executive of the DVLA, said the tool would help drivers deal with their motoring details more effectively.

She added: "We are asking motorists to help us test the service. It's free, and simple to sign up for an account.

"This new service is being developed and we will be adding more features but we want to give customers access as early as possible so they can try it out and let us have their feedback."

The reminder comes ahead of new car taxes launching in April, which will see most drivers pay more to keep their vehicles on the road.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed in the recent Autumn Budget that the Government would be hiking costs.

From April 1, 2026, Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for cars, vans and motorcycles will be uprated in line with RPI inflation.

The same will apply for heavy goods vehicles, while the Government also announced that the HGV levy would also rise in line with inflation.

Significant changes will also be made to the Expensive Car Supplement, as unveiled by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in November.

The Government will oversee the rollout of the new ECS threshold for zero emission vehicles. From April, only EVs with a list price of £50,000 or more will need to pay.

This additional tax will still apply to petrol, diesel and alternative fuel cars with a list price of more than £40,000 for the first five years that the vehicle is registered.
