'It’s important to weigh up the potential increased cost of your insurance compared to the cost of any modifications'

Motorists have been warned that adding modifications to a vehicle such as tinted windows or roof racks, could increase car insurance premiums.

Insurance providers have warned van drivers to be aware that any modifications made to their vehicles could force the cost of their insurance up.

Changing steel wheels into alloys can be beneficial by reducing the weight of the van, but insurance costs may increase because of wheel modification, research found.

Meanwhile, van drivers who have specialised equipment inside, for personal or commercial use, have been told to make providers aware of the installations.

While tinted windows may increase security levels by deterring criminals, insurers said they are classed as a modification and could be the reason insurance costs have risen.

Tim Alcock, from Lease Van, said: “Van drivers should be aware of the modifications they’re making to their vehicles which could mean insurance prices are actually increasing.

“Even if the changes seem minor and beneficial to your van, such as changing the steel wheel to alloys, insurance providers must be made aware of any modifications.

“It’s important to weigh up the potential increased cost of your insurance compared to the cost of any modifications.”

Adding or removing seats and storage is another modification that could force premiums up, and van drivers installing roof racks should let providers know of the changes due to costs potentially rising, Alcock added.

The price of car insurance remains its highest on record, with drivers now paying £995 on average for their coverage.

While insurance companies need to be updated, the DVLA must also know about any modifications.

Motorists have also been warned that they could be hit with a massive £1,000 fine if they make a modification to their vehicle and do not tell the DVLA.

Research conducted with 2,000 drivers found that one in 25 people have made a modification to their vehicle that should have been reported to the Government agency.

However, only 62 per cent have done so, potentially meaning that thousands of drivers could be risking fines.

John Woosey, founder of Ripe Insurance, said: “For many people, personalising their car with custom modifications is a harmless passion. And the good news is the majority of mods are completely safe and legal.

“However, amidst the excitement of making upgrades, you must not forget about the necessary admin that goes along with it.”

While tinted windows can prevent sun glares and bright headlights from affecting drivers, they can also lead to fines if the tint has not been applied properly or is too dark.
