Motorists are being urged to ensure they stay safe over the holiday period

Experts have warned drivers that they could be slapped with huge costs over the coming days as new data shows that claims typically spike by 40 per cent.

Drivers will continue to hit the roads this week to visit friends and family to celebrate the festive period.

However, fresh research has found that car insurance claims typically jump by a staggering 40 per cent on New Year's Eve.

This is based on comparing claims data on New Year's Eve with the daily average number of claims for the same time period between 2020 and 2024.

Motorists are more likely lodge a car insurance claim between Christmas Day and New Year's Day for several notable incidents.

The most common issues included damaged windscreens, rear-end collisions and motorists hitting parked cars.

The data identified that a significant number of incidents came as people were visiting friends and family.

Car insurance claims could be more likely to occur during this period as people drive in areas they are not familiar with.

This could lead to differing motoring conditions, parking layouts and even a hesitancy among some drivers, prompting further issues.

James Armstrong, CEO of Veygo by Admiral, urged drivers to follow the rules of the road, regardless of the traffic conditions.

He added: "Despite New Year's Eve being quieter in comparison to the start of the festive season, it's imperative to still pay attention.

"Many drivers may think that because there is less traffic, they can take more risks, such as speeding," PA reported.

The data also identified that incidents could lead to claims when people travel to the tip to remove any boxes or rubbish from the festive period.

With the likelihood of car insurance claims rising over the coming days, experts have called on drivers to prepare for any eventuality with their plans.

For example, if someone is expecting to drink alcohol, they should plan ahead and book a taxi, arrange a lift or use public transport.

Mr Armstrong also urged drivers to ensure they are safe when behind the wheel in difficult weather conditions, as the stopping distance could be increased.

The expert also noted that people travelling to see friends and family should not overpack their vehicles, especially if they are travelling longer distances.

If their vehicles are filled with gifts, it could obscure their view behind, leaving drivers to solely rely on their wing mirrors.

He continued, saying: "Before starting any journey, especially after a period where your car has been unused, take a few minutes to inspect it.

"Check your tyre pressure and tread, ensure all lights are working, top up your washer fluid, and make sure your windscreen wipers are in good condition."
