Real MPG analysis reveals that Toyota, Suzuki and Nissan models consistently outperform competitors across petrol, diesel and hybrid categories.

Several Japanese models have achieved fuel economy figures exceeding 70 miles per gallon in everyday driving conditions.

These real-world results, compiled from authentic user experiences across Britain's roads, demonstrate notable variations from official WLTP testing figures used by manufacturers.

The data encompasses vehicles across all segments, from compact city cars to family-sized models.

Suzuki claimed all three top positions in the petrol category, with the 2015-19 Celerio 1.0 DualJet city car achieving the highest Real MPG score at 70.1 miles per gallon.

The manufacturer's 2016-19 Baleno DualJet secured second place with 63.5mpg, while the 2017-24 Swift 1.0 BoosterJet Hybrid rounded out Suzuki's podium sweep in third position.

These figures demonstrate that smaller, lighter vehicles continue to deliver superior fuel efficiency, though the data confirms numerous family-sized cars also achieve impressive economy, exceeding 50mpg.

David Ross, senior editor at Honest John, said: "Vehicle manufacturers use a standard process to arrive at MPG figures, known as the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Testing Procedure, or WLTP.

"While it is said to closely replicate real-world usage, it’s only in daily use when you can truly assess how economical a car really is, and the Real MPG data has shown us some clear differences between WLTP figures and those achieved by HonestJohn.co.uk readers.

"One thing is certain, though, and it’s that Japanese brands came out on top for Real MPG performance."

Toyota dominated the hybrid category, with the 2021 Yaris Cross 1.5 VVT-i Hybrid recording 70.5mpg in Real MPG testing. The 2020-onwards Yaris Hybrid followed closely at 69.6mpg, whilst Suzuki's Swace (2021-25) claimed third place with 65.5mpg.

In the diesel segment, Nissan's 2017-2022 Micra dCi 90 led with 69.6mpg, ahead of the SEAT Ibiza 1.4 TDI Ecomotive at 66.5mpg.

The plug-in hybrid category saw Toyota's 2017-22 Prius 1.8 VVT-i achieve a remarkable 133.5mpg.

The results highlight how Japanese manufacturers have optimised their vehicles for British driving conditions, delivering fuel economy that often surpasses official ratings.
