More than two million new cars were sold over the last 12 months, with many drivers opting for new electric vehicles and turning their backs on petrol and diesel cars.
Several new brands made a significant on the market, including BYD and Jaecoo, with drivers getting their hands on a wider range of vehicles than ever before.
New data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has collated the 10 best-selling petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric models from 2025.
The Ford Puma hybrid retains its spot at the top of the ranking, while staples of the road, like the Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Corsa, also remain popular among Britons.

1. Ford Puma - 55,488 sales
The Ford Puma | FORDThe Ford Puma has placed at the top of the best-selling list for the last three years.
Its electric counterpart, the Ford Puma Gen-E, is eligible for the maximum £3,750 Electric Car Grant incentive, with Ford hoping sales will continue to flourish.
2. Kia Sportage - 47,788 sales

Kia confirmed that the Sportage model was also the brand's top-selling vehicle globally, with an impressive 569,688 registrations.
Paul Philpott, Kia UK's President and CEO, said: "This success was driven by a combination of legacy best-sellers – such as Sportage, Stonic, and Picanto."
3. Nissan Qashqai - 41,141 sales

Nissan recently started production of the all-new hybrid Qashqai model at its famed Sunderland plant in the North East of England.
The new e-POWER electrified powertrain will have a potential range of 745 miles and a segment-leading fuel efficiency of 62mpg.
4. Vauxhall Corsa - 35,947 sales

The Vauxhall Corsa

The Corsa took top spot for the best-selling supermini in the UK, with UK managing director Eurig Druce, saying it was a "proud moment for everyone at Vauxhall".
Vauxhall's Corsa Electric variant is also becoming more popular, with the 50kWh model delivering 221 miles, or drivers can select the 51kWh 156PS version with 266 miles of range.

5. Nissan Juke - 34,773 sales

Nissan captured its second placing in the best-sellers list with the Juke, which is also in production at the Sunderland factory.
6. Volkswagen Golf - 32,478 sales

The iconic Golf model celebrated its 50th birthday last year, with Volkswagen seeing more than 37 million units produced since its launch in 1974.
It also remains Europe's best-selling car since the invention of the automobile, with VW recently launching upgraded hybrid models.
7. Volvo XC40 - 30,404 sales

The award-winning SUV remains one of the most popular vehicles on the road, with drivers praising it for its safety and impressive performance.
8. MG HS - 30,191 sales

The MG HS

The HS helped MG secure 300,000 sales across Europe for the first time last year, a near 30 per cent increase compared to the previous 12 months.
Sales of the HS Hybrid+ model pushed the brand's total hybrid vehicle sales to 137,000, a staggering 300 per cent increase year-on-year.
9. Volkswagen Tiguan - 29,857 sales

The Volkswagen Tiguan

The Tiguan remains among Volkswagen's most popular vehicles in its stellar lineup, with the brand guaranteeing that the name will remain once the brand goes fully electric.
CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed in 2024 that the Tiguan would live on alongside the Golf and GTI titles.
10. Hyundai Tucson - 28,613 sales

British drivers were clear in their desire to own an SUV, with the Tucson also seeing impressive sales totals in 2025.
Hyundai's flagship has seen 1.4 million sales in Europe and seven million globally since its launch in 2004.
