A growing number of people taking the diabetes and weight loss medication Mounjaro are reporting an unexpected side effect: temporary hair shedding.
This phenomenon, dubbed "Mounjaro hair," has become a concern for some users of tirzepatide, the drug's active ingredient, a GP told GB News.
The medication helps manage type 2 diabetes and supports weight reduction by prolonging feelings of fullness and reducing food intake. But as it continues to gain popularity, a slew of side effects have been reported in connection with the drug, with reports of hair loss becoming increasingly common.
The latest clinical trials have shown that hair loss affects approximately one in twenty people taking tirzepatide.

While not officially recognised as a direct side effect of the medicine, the condition has gained enough attention to earn its nickname among medical professionals.
However, GP Dr Asimah Hanif emphasised that the shedding occurs primarily due to the body's response to quick weight changes.
"Hair thinning can be upsetting, but it’s often just a sign your body is going through a change," the expert told GB News.
"Losing weight too quickly makes hair loss more likely," she revealed. Maintaining a gradual, steady weight loss pace rather than rapid reduction is therefore crucial.
Rapid weight loss can shock the system, causing more hair follicles to enter a resting phase, which leads to increased shedding several months later.
Additional factors contributing to hair loss during weight reduction include insufficient nutrient intake, particularly protein, iron, zinc and vitamins.
"Not eating enough protein, iron, zinc, or vitamins can affect hair growth," added Dr Hanif. "Even healthy changes like weight loss can trigger a short-term reaction in your hair cycle."
Fortunately, several strategies can help minimise hair loss while taking Mounjaro, the expert reassured.
A balanced diet with adequate protein from sources such as chicken, fish, beans, eggs, and tofu is essential, along with iron-rich foods including spinach, lentils and red meat.
Dr Hanif also stressed that regular meals should not be skipped, even during weight loss efforts.
Some patients may benefit from nutritional supplements, including multivitamins containing iron and zinc, biotin for hair and nail health, and vitamin B12 or D if deficiencies exist.

For those experiencing hair shedding, reassurance comes from understanding the temporary nature of the condition.
In fact, hair typically begins to regrow within three to six months once weight stabilises and the body adjusts to changes.
Full regrowth may require additional time beyond the initial recovery period, with the GP noting that the body simply needs time to adapt to significant changes.
But with proper nutritional support, appropriate supplementation and patience, the condition usually resolves completely, allowing hair to return to its previous density and appearance.
