Simple everyday habits could effectively support vascular health

Many people struggle with varicose veins, but there's good news about managing them naturally.

GP and medical director at Selph, Dr Claire Merrifield, explained that while genetics often play a role in their development, simple lifestyle adjustments can make a real difference.

"Regular movement and exercise is one of the best things you can do to prevent varicose veins from getting worse and to improve any symptoms you may get from them," she told GB News.

In fact, preventing these troublesome veins doesn't require drastic measures.

Through everyday habits like staying active, watching your weight, and making smart food choices, you can support your vein health effectively.

The brilliant thing is that you don't need a gym membership to help your veins. Dr Merrifield recommended activities that get your calf muscles working - think walking, swimming, or cycling.

"Exercises like pointing and flexing your foot and standing on your toes will all use calf muscles that pump blood back to your heart," she explained.

Even better, it doesn't have to be intense. "The exercise doesn't have to be hugely strenuous; even simple ankle flexing and calf raising throughout the day will help," Dr Merrifield noted.

She also suggested yoga might offer extra benefits for easing varicose vein symptoms.

Keeping your weight in check is another key factor, with Dr Merrifield pointing out that "carrying extra weight around the middle can affect blood flow up from the legs".

It is worth giving your legs a proper rest, particularly after spending ages sitting or standing, she advised, adding: "Regularly elevating your legs above heart level will also help."

"Try propping your legs up on pillows while watching TV or reading," she suggested.

These simple habits can really help your circulation and reduce the strain on your veins throughout the day.

What you eat can make a real difference to your vein health. Dr Merrifield recommends loading up on fibre and foods packed with antioxidants and flavonoids.

"Eating a fibre-rich diet and foods that are rich in antioxidants and flavonoids like berries and other fruits and vegetables can improve the health of the circulatory system," she explained.

Cutting back on salt is worth doing, too. "Limiting salt intake can also help prevent swelling and reduce blood pressure, which improves the symptoms of varicose veins," Dr Merrifield noted.

She advocates sticking to whole foods while steering clear of ultra-processed options, too much alcohol, and fast food to keep both your weight and veins healthy.
