The UK is seeing an increase in Hodgkin lymphoma cases, and forecasts indicate this upward trend will persist without targeted health measures.

Data from Cancer Research UK shows the condition most commonly strikes those between 80 and 84 years old, who account for roughly four per cent of new diagnoses.

But it's not just older people who face this rare cancer, as Chloe Denham was just a 22-year-old when she received her own diagnosis.

"About two years ago, I went to my GP because I was having some swelling in my neck," she recalled, marking the beginning of her journey with the illness.

Looking back, Chloe recognised that her symptoms emerged gradually over time, and continued to develop up until the point her diagnosis was confirmed.

"Back then, I was having night sweats," she explained. "When I turned 20, I went through a big shift in the way my body felt, to the point where I was telling people you go through a second puberty, which you don't.

"Fast-forward to last September, when I took on my own salon.

"While we were renovating it, I noticed a bit of a rash on my leg, which kind of looked like dermatitis. Then by April/May of this year, I noticed I had a lump in my groin."

Chloe also experienced intermittent health issues and noticed physical activity became increasingly difficult.

"I'd also been having some episodes with chills, where I was getting some chest pain, and feeling under the weather. Not every day, but on and off periodically," Chloe said.

"I was struggling a lot with shortness of breath when I was doing exercise, but I'd got it in my head that it was because I hadn't been to the gym in a little while."

Recalling the moment her doctor called her in to discuss test results, she revealed: "He said it's Hodgkin's Lymphoma and it's stage 3. I only thought it would be stage 1 because I didn't think I felt unwell enough."

Chloe is now undergoing treatment for her condition, which includes "six cycles of chemotherapy and immunotherapy".

Through sharing her experience, Chloe hopes others will recognise potential warning signs earlier.

What is Hodgkin lymphoma?

Hodgkin lymphoma is an uncommon form of cancer that targets lymphocytes - the white blood cells that play a crucial role in helping our bodies battle infections.

The disease can affect people of any age, though it's most frequently seen in older adults.

As Chloe's experience demonstrates, symptoms can easily be dismissed or attributed to other causes, making awareness all the more vital.
