The actress's latest film has performed disastrously

Actress Ruby Rose has launched a fierce attack on Sydney Sweeney following the disastrous box office performance of the boxing biopic Christy, which earned merely £1.04 million in its opening weekend.

The Orange Is the New Black star took to Threads on Monday evening to denounce Ms Sweeney, branding her "a cretin" and accusing her of destroying the film about pioneering female boxer Christy Martin.

"You ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better," Ms Rose wrote in her scathing post.

The David Michôd-directed film, which depicts Martin's rise to fame in the 1990s whilst enduring domestic abuse from her husband and trainer James V. Martin, recorded one of the poorest opening weekends for a wide release in recent memory.

Ms Rose revealed she had been originally attached to the project, claiming the initial script was "incredible" and "life changing" before Sweeney's involvement.

"I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material.

"Most of us were actually gay," the 39-year-old actress wrote, suggesting the film's direction shifted dramatically after casting changes.

The Batwoman star accused Ms Sweeney of lacking authenticity in portraying the role.

"None of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us," Ms Rose stated.

She also targeted Ms Sweeney's public relations team for their response to the film's commercial failure.

"For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the 'people'," Rose wrote, dismissing their defence of the project.

Ms Sweeney responded to the film's poor reception with a passionate defence on social media, maintaining she created art for "impact" rather than "numbers".

"I am so deeply proud of this movie. Proud of the film David made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin," the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram.

The Euphoria actress emphasised the film's significance in raising awareness about domestic violence.

"If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded," she stated.

Ms Sweeney described the project as "the most impactful" of her career, expressing that the experience had been "one of the greatest honors" of her life.

The controversy arrives amidst a series of recent backlashes against Sweeney, including criticism over an American Eagle advertising campaign featuring wordplay between "great genes" and "jeans" that some interpreted as having eugenics undertones.

President Trump and Vice President Vance publicly supported the advertisement, calling it the "hottest ad ever", which Sweeney described as "surreal" in a GQ interview.

The actress has faced mounting tensions with fellow celebrities, with reports suggesting Zendaya refuses to stand near her at events due to political differences.

When questioned about the controversies, Sweeney told GQ: "I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear."
