Jim Beard was the bands touring keyboardist since 2008

Jim Beard has died at the age of 63 due to complications from a sudden illness and was “surrounded by loved ones”, a spokesperson has confirmed.

Beard had been a member of Steely Dan since 2008, and had also recently toured with legendary band the Eagles for their Long Goodbye tour.


Beard's last performance with Steely Dan was on January 20th in Phoenix, Arizona.

A cause of death or statement has not been announced.

Fans of the musician were saddened to hear the news of his death and flocked to their X accounts to express their opinions.

One commented: “Steely Dan keyboardist has passed away. I'm saddened. You all don't like them.”

“It's with heavy heart that we report news of long time Steely Dan pianist/keyboardist Jim Beard's passing.

“Enjoy this video showing the lighter side of Jim with Steely Dan guitarist Jon Herrington. You will be missed, Jim,” another added.

“Steely Dan member Jim Beard passed away. Rest in peace,” a third added before a fourth echoed: “His music with the band will live on forever.”

One saddened fans said: “RIP Jim Beard…Thank you for your music.” (sic)

His friend, Peter Erksine, wrote in memory alongside a photo of the pair: "Jim Beard, RIP. Pictured here with Eliane Elias in 1988. Jim was the glue and such a great presence on so many projects.

“I'm going to miss the man, his wit and his musical incisiveness. You made a difference, Jim."

Beard was a talented musician, composer and songwriter with over 100 published compositions, leaving his work to transcended across creative fields, including recordings, books, orchestras, television and movies.

The keyboardist began his music career in New York, after moving there from Pennsylvania, where he was born in 1960.

It was there he began working alongside the likes of Pat Metheny, Shorter and McLaughlin.

He also recorded with artists including the Brecker Brothers, Dianne Reeves and Steve Vai.
