The pair's son Nick has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with his parents' deaths

Official death certificates for filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele have confirmed the couple died within minutes of suffering numerous knife wounds at their Los Angeles residence on December 14.

Documents obtained from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office reveal that both died from "multiple sharp force injuries" inflicted "with a knife" at their Brentwood home.

The legendary director, aged 78, was pronounced dead at 3:45pm, whilst his 70-year-old wife was declared deceased just one minute later at 3:46pm.

The certificates specify that the interval between the onset of their injuries and death lasted only "minutes."

Their daughter Romy discovered the bodies in the master bedroom after a massage therapist had been unable to reach the couple.

The couple's remains were cremated at Mount Sinai Mortuary on December 19, five days after their deaths.

According to the official documents, their ashes were subsequently transferred to the residence of their eldest son, Jake Reiner, who served as the informant for both death certificates.

A notable detail in the paperwork shows that whilst Rob's marital status was recorded as "married" at the time of his death, Michele's certificate lists her as "widowed" – a consequence of her husband being discovered moments before her.

Both underwent post-mortem examinations before the cremation took place.

The family has indicated that a memorial service honouring the couple will be announced at a future date, with a spokesperson confirming that Jake and Romy Reiner remain appreciative of the widespread support they have received.

Their son Nick, 32, was taken into custody on the evening of December 14 and has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with his parents' deaths.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges on December 16, noting that Nick faces a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders and a further allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon.

"These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty," Hochman stated during a press conference.

Nick made a brief court appearance on December 17 but did not enter a plea after his lawyer, defence attorney Alan Jackson, requested a continuance.

He remains in custody without bail, with his arraignment now scheduled for January 7.

Jake and Romy Reiner broke their silence three days after the tragedy, releasing a statement that conveyed the depth of their anguish.

"Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," they said.

"The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

The siblings expressed gratitude for the "outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support" from both loved ones and strangers alike.

They appealed for privacy and asked that "speculation be tempered with compassion and humanity," urging the public to remember their parents "for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."
