Franklin died peacefully in his sleep on Christmas morning

Former Doctor Who and Emmerdale star Richard Franklin has died at the age of 87, as tributes pour in for the beloved actor.

In a statement, Franklin’s family said the actor had died peacefully in his sleep on Christmas morning after fighting a long-term illness.


Whovians will recognise Franklin for his on screen appearance as Captain Mike Yates of Unit in the series from 1971 to 1974 in the then Jon Pertwee-led show.

Although Franklin was mostly a stage actor, he took on various roles both on television and in Doctor Who spin-off media.

“Richard sadly died in his sleep after fighting long-term illness,” his family said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic story telling.

“He is also well remembered outside the family for his long-running career in TV and theatre where he delighted audiences of all ages.

“This gave him great joy and we know his legacy will last.”

Líam Rudden, who was given his first professional acting job by Franklin, also paid tribute to his mentor.

He wrote on his official X account: “It is with great sadness, that the family of Richard Franklin have asked me to share news of his passing, early this morning.

“Richard passed away peacefully in his sleep.

“Details of funeral arrangements will be shared here when announced.

“Sleep well, Richard.”

Franklin appeared as a regular on Emmerdale, Crossroads and several other high-profile British TV programmes.

As a writer, Franklin published the book Forest Wisdom: Radical Reform of Democracy and the Welfare State and has written novels based on the Whoniverse.

He also stood as a candidate for Parliament and started the Silent Majority Party.

On social media, fans paid their respects to the beloved actor.

One fan said: “My first memory of Captain Mike Yates was in The Green Death, and Richard Franklin delivered a magnificent performance. Will be rewatching it to honour his memory. RIP.”

Another wrote: “Richard Franklin was fantastic in Doctor Who as Captain Mike Yates. He will be sadly missed.”

A spokesperson for Sylvester McCoy added: “Sylvester asked me to post how sad he was to hear Richard Franklin had died. And he knows many of you will be too. May he rest in peace.”
