The couple are parents to two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. Reports suggest that whilst the separation is now confirmed, the circumstances surrounding their decision to part ways remain undisclosed.
It is understood Mr Urban has relocated from their family residence to a separate property in Nashville.
Sources speaking to TMZ indicated that Ms Kidman was opposed to the separation and has been attempting to salvage their marriage.
Sources suggested that demanding professional commitments and insufficient quality time together were primary factors in their decision to live separately.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, one insider stated: "Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour.
"There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce. They been together for decades so there is a world which they can reconcile, but the way their pairing is now, they are not a couple."
The pair first crossed paths at a G'Day USA event in Los Angeles in 2005, where they exchanged contact details.
Ms Kidman has previously recounted how Mr Urban arrived at her flat at 5am on her 38th birthday carrying flowers, describing the gesture as the moment she knew "This is the man I hope I get to marry."
Their union faced early trials when Mr Urban entered rehabilitation for substance abuse issues merely months after their wedding.
The actress organised an intervention alongside Urban's close associates, which the singer later credited as life-changing.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey in 2010, Mr Urban reflected: "Everything was just designed, I believe, for that moment to fuse us together.
"I look back now and realise Nic has taught me so much and brought so much into my life and opened my eyes in so many ways. [This is] the best place I've ever been."
