The TV personality was diagnosed with the bowel condition after being admitted overnight

Kerry Katona was rushed to hospital on Thursday morning and subsequently diagnosed with colitis, a bowel condition she had not previously been aware of.

The former Atomic Kitten singer shared her ordeal with followers through an Instagram video posted at 2:10 am on Friday, appearing visibly exhausted as she spoke from a bed positioned in a hospital corridor.

The 45-year-old told her audience: "Hi guys it's 2.10 in the morning and I have been in hospital since yesterday - yesterday morning."

Due to the facility operating at full capacity, Ms Katona explained she had been unable to secure a proper bed and was instead receiving treatment in the hallway.

"It's very full so unfortunately, I'm on a bed in the hall," she said, before adding with characteristic humour: "I have something called colitis - something to do with my bowel. So it's been s**** - excuse the pun."

During the video, the mother-of-five showed off an intravenous cannula attached to her arm before panning her camera to reveal nursing staff working nearby in the corridor where she was stationed.

Despite her difficult circumstances, Ms Katona remained positive about her situation, telling fans: "I haven't slept since yesterday, the day before. I'm in the right place."

The television personality appeared wearing a grey hoodie and black cap as she addressed her followers, her voice sounding weary after spending more than 24 hours awaiting proper accommodation at the medical facility.

According to the Daily Mail, the overnight stay at her local hospital resulted in the previously undiagnosed condition being identified, with colitis described as a painful inflammation of the colon's inner lining.

The NHS describes ulcerative colitis as a long-term condition characterised by inflammation affecting both the colon and rectum.

The large intestine, known as the colon, and the rectum, where waste is stored before passing, can develop small ulcers on their lining which may bleed and produce pus.

Those suffering from the condition typically experience symptoms including the need to empty their bowels frequently, stomach pain and recurring bouts of diarrhoea.

Additional symptoms can include extreme fatigue, reduced appetite and loss of weight, according to NHS guidance.

The severity of these symptoms varies depending on the extent of inflammation present and which areas of the digestive system are affected.

This hospital admission follows a challenging period for Ms Katona's health, with the star having previously revealed she developed alopecia following her separation from fiancé Ryan Mahoney.

The couple ended their relationship in August 2024, with Ms Katona subsequently noticing significant hair loss whilst performing up to three pantomime shows daily during the Christmas season.

Speaking to the Daily Mail about that difficult time, she said: "It was heartbreak, it was exhausting. I also got alopecia. It was really stressful."

The NHS classifies alopecia as a general term encompassing various forms of hair loss, which can affect the entire scalp or remain confined to specific patches, and may prove either temporary or permanent depending on the underlying cause.

Ms Katona has since moved on from her heartbreak and is now in a relationship with Paolo Margaglione, whom she met whilst filming Celebs Go Dating.

The couple recently marked nearly a year together, though both have stated they are in no rush to marry or have more children, with Ms Katona raising five youngsters and Mr Margaglione having two of his own.

Writing in her New! magazine column, Ms Katona gushed about their connection: "Paolo and I have been together nearly a year now but it feels like seven years already! It's like he's been in my life forever, it's crazy. And I've never had a connection like this with anybody."

The pair are currently planning a romantic Valentine's Day trip abroad, with Ms Katona hoping for a sunny destination following a recent cold visit to Turkey.
