The Sugababes singer will perform with Gorka Marquez

Sugababes singer Keisha Buchanan has hit back at social media trolls who've criticised her spot in this year's BBC Strictly Christmas special due to her experience in a girl band.

Buchanan is one of six celebrities who've signed up to take to the dancefloor for the one-off festive special.

She'll be dancing with Gorka Marquez who was booted off the main series this year early on alongside Nikita Kanda.

Dan Snow, Danny Cipriani, Sally Nugent, Jamie Borthwick and Tillie Amartey complete the line-up alongside the Sugababes singer.

Speaking about her reasons for signing up for the show, she admitted it was her bandmates who played a major part in convincing her - although admitted that her time in the group won't necessarily give her an advantage over her fellow celebs.

"Mutya [Buena] and the girls in general, have always said, ‘You've never done anything outside of the group. Why don't you?’" Buchanan said.

"A lot of people don't know this about me, but I'm actually a bit of an introvert and extrovert.

"They call it ambivert, so I am kind of shy and self-conscious, and I just never thought that I would do this. But the girls gave me courage.

"So I just thought okay, but I knew that I was going to come in and definitely have step my game up a lot."

Directly addressing criticism she's been on the receiving end of, Buchanan added: "A lot of people do think, 'Oh, you perform to millions of people and you must be so confident', but actually you have to gear yourself up.

"The Sugababes, are actually known as the girl band who didn't dance so I want people to know that,

"Because the comments that I get on Instagram say, 'This is going on this be so easy for her', but when we all get together and rehearse, I feel like I've struggled the most," she added to the BBC.

The debate about previous dance experience among Strictly Come Dancing stars isn't a new topic of discussion.

In this year's main series which was won by Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola, finalist Layton Williams received online complaints over his experience in the world of musical theatre.

Williams even engaged in one particular spat with a social media user who he branded as a "so-called" Strictly fan after he faced criticism about his career.

The 29-year-old danced with Nikita Kuzmin and he will return for the Strictly Live Tour next year as well as reunite with Kuzmin for their own dance classes.

Meanwhile, fans will have to tune in on Christmas Day to see if Buchanan has what it takes to win the festive special - although the results have leaked online before the episode has aired.
