The former Towie star showed photos of the milestone birthday event

Kate Ferdinand marked her stepson Tate's milestone 18th birthday with an extravagant celebration at the family's Portuguese villa on Tuesday, and included a sweet nod to the teenager's late mother, Rebecca Ellison.

The former Towie star, 34, shared glimpses of the festivities on Instagram, captioning the post "a night for Tate" alongside a champagne glass emoji.

Among the photographs displayed at the poolside gathering was a poignant image of a young Tate and his brother Lorenz being embraced by their late mother.

Rebecca, who was married to former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, 47, passed away from breast cancer in 2015 at the age of 34.

The touching photograph was given a prominent position alongside other family pictures, demonstrating that Rebecca remains fondly remembered more than a decade after her death.

Ms Ferdinand's followers were quick to recognise the heartfelt gesture, flooding the comments with praise for including Rebecca in the celebration.

One fan wrote: "That pic of the 2 boys with their mummy, you're the best."

Another commented: "The pictures with their mum, honestly no one better could have come into their lives and took on the shoes of mum."

Several supporters directed their appreciation towards Kate directly, with one writing: "Their mummy would be so proud of you Kate."

Another simply noted: "The way you included his Mum in this."

The celebration featured an array of lavish decorations surrounding the pool area, with giant illuminated letters spelling out the birthday boy's name.

Personalised touches included miniature burger toppers featuring images of Tate as a toddler wearing a party hat, along with custom chip cartons bearing his name.

Guests were also treated to novelty sunglasses emblazoned with "Tate 18" on the lenses.

The teenager, who actually turns 18 in August, was photographed dancing with a sparkler in his mouth as he celebrated with loved ones.

Mr Ferdinand attended wearing a waistcoat without a shirt underneath paired with sunglasses, whilst the former reality star opted for an elegant pale pink drop-waist dress.

Ms Ferdinand has previously opened up about the emotional challenges she faced when joining the family following Rebecca's death.

In her book How To Build A Family, she wrote: "If I could bring Rebecca back, I would in an instant because of the pain I've seen in them."

She continued: "A child losing their parent is horrendous. You want to scoop them up and bring their mum back to make them happy, but you can't."

The television personality also reflected on the unique difficulties of entering a bereaved household, writing: "As a step-parent coming into a bereaved home, you can sometimes find yourself in situations where you feel like you're walking in the steps of someone else's life."

Ms Ferdinand admitted she experienced guilt over her emotions, feeling "it wasn't about me," whilst recognising a connection with Rebecca through their shared role as mothers to the children.
