The rapper was supposed to headline all three nights of this summer's festival

Camilla Tominey has criticised what she described as a “double standard” in how mental illness is treated after Kanye West was blocked from entering the UK ahead of his planned Wireless Festival headline slot.

Speaking alongside Daily Telegraph colleague Tim Stanley, the GB News star argued that the backlash to the rapper, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the festival, went too far.

The Home Office ruled that Mr West’s presence would not be “conducive to the public good”, prompting organisers to pull this year’s event, where he had been due to headline all three nights.

The decision to cancel the festival came just hours after Mr West issued a statement addressing the furore following a series of antisemitic social media posts and outbursts last year.

Following the original backlash, Mr West's statement read: “I’ve been following the conversation around Wireless and want to address it directly.

“My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music.

“I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person, to listen.

“I know words aren’t enough – I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”

During the discussion on a Daily Telegraph podcast, Ms Tominey said: “The likes of Sered Davie and all of their ilk are perfectly happy to be doling out welfare money and motability cars to people with mild anxiety.

"Yet, when somebody high-profile presents themselves with probably the most classically obvious case of mental ill health we've witnessed in recent years, everyone starts pointing the finger.”

She continued: “We either accept that people who are mentally ill say irretrievably stupid, offensive, racist things and they don't have full agency over their actions or we don't.”

Her remarks appeared to reference Mr West’s long-standing bipolar diagnosis.

Meanwhile, Mr Stanley referenced the recent Bafta awards ceremony incident involving an individual with Tourette's syndrome, where offensive remarks were made involuntarily.

He said: “It’s like John Davidson.

“We had to have a conversation in which we explained to people that this is something he had no control over.

"But there were some people who felt that should have been cut and shouldn’t have been broadcast… and I frankly don’t blame them, because the things that were said were incredibly hurtful.”

Public reaction to the podcast clip has been sharply divided.

Some social media users rejected the suggestion that Mr West’s behaviour could be mitigated by mental illness.

One wrote: “So every antisemitic rant, Nazi song, racist merchandise is all down to mental health?”

Another added: “West is a repeat offender… his pattern is sorry, not sorry.”

Others, however, backed Camilla's argument, suggesting the Government’s decision risks reinforcing stigma around mental illness.

“It’s deeply disturbing that the Government have banned entry to someone with disclosed mental illness who is clearly now in treatment,” one commenter said.

“They are stigmatising mental illness further," declared another.

The controversy comes amid heightened scrutiny of Mr West’s past actions, including the release of a song titled “Heil Hitler” and the sale of swastika-branded merchandise.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer said the rapper “should never have been invited” to perform at Wireless, adding that the Government “stands firmly with the Jewish community” in confronting antisemitism.
