The TV presenter went public with his terminal cancer diagnosis in late-2022

A Place in the Sun and Escape to the Country star Jonnie Irwin has melted hearts with his latest update.

The 49-year-old took to Instagram to share with his followers that he and has family are marking a very special day.

That's because Tuesday marks the first day of school for Irwin and his wife Jess' eldest son Rex, four.

Rex is one of Irwin and his wife's three children but two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac are still a few years away from hitting the milestone.

Irwin gushed over the significant day in his eldest son's life as he remarked: "First day of school. I’m so proud of him I could burst. X."

The TV presenter then shared a snap of the youngster with a huge smile etched on his face as he looked smart in his new uniform.

One fan replied to the post: "Omg such a munchkin. Well done mommy and daddy excellent job xxx."

And a second followed suit: "It's so very special and precious, the first day at school - so many feelings for both parents and child. He is very cute."

Meanwhile, a third weighed in: "He's like his Dad !!! proud Papa moment x."

While another added to the post: "So glad you can enjoy this special milestone."

"What a day. He looks ace. xx," commented a fifth with the post also racking up hundreds of likes.

Irwin is no stranger to sharing adorable family updates with his followers as he spends more time at home while undergoing treatment for cancer.

The presenter was first diagnosed with the disease in 2020 but when it spread from his lung to his brain in 2022, Irwin went public with the news.

Irwin has been widely praised for his open and honest account of living with the terminal illness and how he splits time between his Newcastle home and palliative care.

He's also regularly been showing the renovations and transformations he's overseeing at his home in order to make the most out of the space he shares with his young family.

"Full camp was set up with tents and sensory toys and objects.

"Needless to say, we didn’t get to sleep til late. The boys loved it. All set up and taken away the next day. Thanks very much @darkskysleepovers."
